Heaven and Hell #293 (NCE, 2000)

293. The reason spirits who are in touch with hell are attached to us as well is that we are born into all kinds of evil, so that our first life is made up of nothing else. Unless spirits of the same kind were associated with us, then, we could not live or be led out of our evils and reformed. So we are kept in our own life by evil spirits and restrained from it by good spirits. Through the two kinds, we are kept in a balance; and since we are in a balance we enjoy an appropriate measure of freedom and can be led out of our evils and turned toward good. This good can be sown in us as well, which could never happen except in our freedom; and the freedom could not be granted us unless spirits from hell were acting on the one side and spirits from heaven on the other, with us in the middle.

I have been shown that to the extent that we exist from our hereditary nature and from ourselves, we could have no life at all if we were not allowed to engage in evil. We would also have no life if we were not in some freedom, and we cannot be compelled to good: anything compelled does not become part of us. I have also been shown that anything good that we accept in freedom is sown in our intentions and becomes virtually our own. 1This is why we have a communication with hell and a communication with heaven.

Footnotes:

1. All freedom is a matter of love and affection, because what we love, we do freely: 2870, 3158, 8907 [8987?], 8990, 9585, 9591. Freedom is a matter of love, which is its life: 2873. Nothing seems to be ours unless it comes from our freedom: 2880. We need to have some freedom in order to be reformed: 1937, 1947, 2876, 2881, 3145-3146, 3158, 4031, 8700. Otherwise, the love for what is good and true could not be sown in us and given to us as though it were ours: 2877, 2879-2880, 2888 [2883?], 8700. Nothing that is forced upon us is united to us: 2875, 8700. If we could be reformed by force, then everyone would be reformed: 2881. The use of force in reformation is harmful: 4031. The state of some people who had been compelled: 8392.

Heaven and Hell #293 (Harley, 1958)

293. The reason that spirits who communicate with hell are also adjoined to man is that man is born into evils of every kind, consequently his first life can only be from them. Therefore, unless spirits of a nature like his own were adjoined to man he could not live, nor indeed could he be withdrawn from his evils and reformed. He is therefore held in his own life by means of evil spirits and withheld from it by means of good spirits, and by the two kept in equilibrium. Being in equilibrium, he is in his freedom, and can be drawn away from evils and turned towards good, and good can also be implanted in him, which would not be possible at all if he were not in freedom. Freedom is not possible to man unless spirits from hell act on one side and spirits from heaven on the other, and man is in between. Again, it has been shown that so far as a man's life is from what he inherits, and thus from self, if he were not permitted to be in evil he would have no life, and if he were not in freedom he would have no life. Also he cannot be forced to good, and what is forced does not abide; further that the good that man receives in freedom is implanted in his will and becomes, as it were, his own (ejus proprium). 1These are the reasons that man has communication with hell and communication with heaven.

Footnotes:

1. All freedom is of love and affection, since what a man loves, that he does freely (Arcana Coelestia 2870, 3158, 8987, 8990, 9585, 9591).

As freedom belongs to man's love, so it belongs to man's life (Arcana Coelestia 2873).

Nothing appears as man's own except what is from freedom (Arcana Coelestia 2880).

Man must have freedom that he maybe reformed (Arcana Coelestia 1937, 1947, 2876, 2881, 3541, 3146, 3158, 4031, 8700).

Otherwise no love of good and truth can be implanted in man and be appropriated seemingly as his own (Arcana Coelestia 2877, 2879-2880, 2883, 8700).

Nothing that is done from compulsion is conjoined to man (Arcana Coelestia 2875, 8700).

If man could be reformed by compulsion every one would be reformed (Arcana Coelestia 2881).

Compulsion in reformation is harmful (Arcana Coelestia 4031).

What states of compulsion are (Arcana Coelestia 8392).

Heaven and Hell #293 (Ager, 1900)

293. The reason why spirits that communicate with hell are also associated with man is that man is born into evils of every kind, consequently his whole life is wholly from evil; and therefore unless spirits like himself were associated with him he could not live, nor indeed could he be withdrawn from his evils and reformed. He is therefore both held in his own life by means of evil spirits and withheld from it by means of good spirits; and by the two he is kept in equilibrium; and being in equilibrium he is in freedom, and can be drawn away from evils and turned towards good, and thus good can be implanted in him, which would not be possible at all if he were not in freedom; and freedom is possible to man only when the spirits from hell act on one side and spirits from heaven on the other, and man is between the two. De Coelo et de Inferno #293 (original Latin)

Status coacti quinam (8392).
