365、由此可见,富人和穷人一样能进天堂,并且一样容易。之所以认为穷人容易进天堂、富人则很难,是因为误解了圣经中提到富人和穷人的经文。在圣经中,就灵义而言,“富人”表示那些拥有对真理和良善的丰富的认识的人,因而是在教会内(圣经所在的地方)的人;而“穷人”则指那些缺乏这些认知但渴慕它们的人,也就是在教会外(没有圣经的地方)的人。

  此处“财主”(或“富人”)既表示属世意义上的富人,也表示属灵意义上的富人。就属世意义而言,富人是指那些拥有大量财富并心系于此的人;但就属灵意义而言,则指那些拥有丰富的认识和知识,也就是属灵的财富,并渴望凭自己的聪明、利用它们将自己引入天堂和教会的事物中的人。由于这违背神性秩序,故经上说“骆驼穿过针的眼比财主进上帝的国还要容易”。“骆驼”在灵义上表示总体上的学习和了解官能,“针眼”表示属灵的真理。{注2}如今人们不知道这就是“骆驼”和“针眼”的含义,因为到现在为止仍没有披露这种知识,那就是讲解圣经字义上所说的事物在灵义上的含义。圣经的每个细节中既有属灵的意义,也有属世的意义。圣经纯粹用属世事物与属灵事物对应的方式写成,以便可以实现天堂与尘世或天使与世人的结合,因为直接的结合已经终止了。由此清楚地看出圣经中“财主”(或“富人”)具体指谁。

365. We may gather from this that rich people arrive in heaven just as much as poor people do, one as easily as the other. The reason people believe that it is easy for the poor and hard for the rich is that the Word is misunderstood when it talks about the rich and the poor. In the spiritual meaning of the Word, "the rich" means people who are amply supplied with understandings of what is true and good, that is, people in the church where the Word is. "The poor" means people who lack these understandings but who long for them, or people outside the church, where the Word is not found.

[2] The rich person dressed in purple and fine linen who was cast into hell means the Jewish nation. Because they had the Word and were therefore amply supplied with understandings of what is good and true, they are called "rich." The garments of purple actually mean understandings of what is good, and the fine linen means understandings of what is true. 1The poor person who was lying in the gateway and who longed to feast on the crumbs that were falling from the rich person's table, who was carried up into heaven by angels, means the non-Jews who did not have understandings of what is good and true but who still longed for them (Luke 16:19, 31).

The rich who were invited to the great feast but who excused themselves also mean the Jewish nation, and the poor who were brought in to replace them mean the non-Jews who were outside the church (Luke 12:16-24, 14:16-24).

[3] We need also to explain who are meant by the rich of whom the Lord said, "It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God" (Matthew 19:24). "The rich person" here means the rich in both senses, natural and spiritual. Rich people in the natural sense are people who have abundant wealth and set their hearts on it, while in a spiritual sense they are people who are amply supplied with insights and knowledge (for these are spiritual wealth) and who want to use them to get themselves into heavenly and ecclesiastical circles by their own intellect. Since this is contrary to the divine design, it says that it is easier for a camel to get through the eye of a needle. On this level of meaning, a camel means our cognitive and informational level in general, and the eye of a needle means spiritual truth. 2

Nowadays people do not know that this is the meaning of the camel and the eye of a needle because there has not yet been any access to the knowledge that teaches what is meant spiritually by the things that the Word says literally. There is spiritual meaning in the details of the Word, and natural meaning as well; because the Word was written in pure correspondences of natural realities with spiritual ones in order to effect a union of heaven and the world, or of angels with us, once the direct union had ceased. We can see from this exactly who are meant by the rich in the Word.

[4] We may gather from a number of passages that on the spiritual level "the rich" in the Word refers to people who enjoy insights into what is good and true and that wealth means those insights themselves, which are spiritual riches: see Isaiah 10:12-14; 30:6-7; 45:3, Jeremiah 17:3; 47:7 [Jeremiah 48:7?], Jeremiah 50:36-37; 51:13, Daniel 5:2-4, Ezekiel 26:7, 12; 27:1-36; Zechariah 9:3-4; Psalms 45:12; Hosea 12:9; Revelation 3:17-18, Luke 14:33, and elsewhere. On the poor in the spiritual sense as people who do not have insights into what is good and true but who long for them, see Matthew 11:5; Luke 6:20-21; 14:21; Isaiah 14:30; 29:19; 41:17-18; Zephaniah 3:12, 18 [13]. 365. From this it can be established that the rich and the poor alike come into heaven, the one as easily as the other. The belief that the poor enter heaven easily and the rich with difficulty comes from not understanding the Word where the rich and the poor are mentioned. In the Word, those who have an abundance of cognitions of good and truth, thus who are within the Church where the Word is, are meant in the spiritual sense by the "rich"; while those who lack these cognitions, and yet desire them, thus who are outside the Church and where there is no Word, are meant by the "poor".

[2] The rich man clothed in purple and fine linen, and cast into hell, means the Jewish nation, which is called rich because it had the Word and had an abundance of cognitions of good and truth therefrom, "garments of purple" signifying cognitions of good, and "garments of fine linen" cognitions of truth. 1But the poor man who lay at the rich man's entrance-hall and longed to be filled with the crumbs that fell from the rich man's table, and who was carried by angels into heaven, means the nations that have no cognitions of good and truth and yet desired them (Luke 16:19-31). By the rich who were called to a great supper and excused themselves is meant the Jewish nation, and by the poor brought in in their place are meant the nations outside the Church (Luke 14:16-24).

And because this is contrary to Divine order it is said to be "easier for a camel to go through a needle's eye", a "camel" signifying the faculty of learning and knowing in a general way, and a "needle's eye" signifying spiritual truth. 2That such is the meaning of a "camel" and a "needle's eye" is not at present known, because the knowledge that teaches what is signified in the spiritual sense by the things said in the literal sense of the Word has not up to this time been disclosed. In the single things of the Word there is a spiritual sense and also a natural sense; for immediate conjunction having ceased, the Word has been written by pure correspondences of natural things with spiritual things in order that there might be conjunction of heaven with the world, that is, a conjunction of angels with men. This makes clear who in particular are meant in the Word by the "rich man".

[4] That the "rich" in the Word mean in the spiritual sense those who are in cognitions of truth and good, and "riches" the cognitions themselves, which are spiritual riches, can be confirmed from various passages (as in Isaiah 10:12-14; 30:6-7; 45:3, Jeremiah 17:3; 48:7; 50:36-37; 51:13, Daniel 5:2-4, Ezekiel 26:7, 12; 27:1 to the end; Zechariah 9:3-4, Psalm 45:12, Hosea 12:8, Revelation 3:7-8, Luke 14:33 and elsewhere). Per "divites" ibi intelliguntur in spirituali sensu illi qui abundant cognitionibus boni et veri, ita qui intra ecclesiam sunt ubi est Verbum; et per "pauperes" illi quibus deficiunt cognitiones illae, et [qui] tamen desiderant illas, ita qui extra ecclesiam sunt ubi non Verbum.


[2] Per "divitem" qui induebatur purpura et bysso, et projectus est in infernum, intelligitur gens Judaica; quae quia habebat Verbum, et inde abundabat cognitionibus boni et veri, dives vocatur: per "vestes ex purpura" etiam significantur cognitiones boni, et per "vestes ex bysso" cognitiones veri: 1per "pauperem" autem qui projectus erat ad vestibulum ejus, et desiderabat saturare micis quae cadebant ex mensa divitis, et portatus ab angelis in caelum, intelliguntur gentes, quae non habeant cognitiones boni et veri, et tamen desiderabant illas (Luca 16:19-31). 2Per "divites" qui vocati ad cenam magnam, et se excusaverunt, intelligitur etiam gens Judaica; et per "pauperes" loco illorum introductos intelliguntur gentes quae extra ecclesiam (Luca 24:16-24).


[3] Quinam intelliguntur per Divitem, de quo Dominus dicit,

"Facilius est camelum per foramen acus transire, quam divitem in regnum Dei introire," (Matthaeus 19:24);

etiam dicetur: per "divitem" ibi intelliguntur divites in utroque sensu tam naturali quam spirituali divites in sensu naturali, qui abundant opibus, et ponunt cor in illis in spirituali autem sensu qui abundant cognitionibus et scientiis, nam hae sunt divitiae spirituales, et per illas se ex propria intelligentia volunt introducere in illa quae caeli et ecclesiae sunt, quod quia est contra ordinem Divinum, dicitur quod facilius sit camelo per foramen acus transire in illo enim sensu per "camelum" significatur cognitivum et scientificum in genere, et per "foramen acus" verum spirituale: 3quod per "camelum" et "foramen acus" illa intelligantur, non hodie scitur, quia non huc usque aperta fuit scientia quae docet quid in sensu spirituali significatur per illa quae in sensu litterali in Verbo dicta sunt in singulis enim Verbi spiritualis sensus est, et quoque naturalis; nam Verbum, ut conjunctio esset caeli cum mundo, seu angelorum cum hominibus, postquam desiit conjunctio immediata, per meras correspondentias naturalium cum spiritualibus conscriptum est: inde patet, quinam per "divitem" ibi in specie intelliguntur.


[4] Quod per "divites" in Verbo in sensu spirituali intelligantur qui in cognitionibus veri et boni sunt, et per "divitias" ipsae cognitiones, quae quoque sunt divitiae spiritules, ex variis locis ibi constare potest:
