  9643.“要作四十个银座”表通过真理所获得的完全支撑。这从“四十”、“座”和“银”的含义清楚可知:“四十”是指完全或完整性(参看9437节);“座”是指支撑;“银”是指真理(1551295456586112691469177999节)。座用银子来造,板用金包裹的原因是,“板”表示良善,“铜”表示真理,良善通过真理拥有能力,从而提供支撑。良善通过真理拥有能力(参看6344642393279410节);“金”表示良善,“银”表示真理(11315511552565869146917893294909510节)。良善之所以通过真理而拥有能力,是因为真理赋予良善以形状,这意味着良善也拥有具体的品质;因为外在形状就存在于具体品质所在之处,或说哪里有具体品质,哪里就有外在的形状。这样,良善就能以这样或那样的方式对事物产生真正的影响。正因如此,良善拥有能力,或说能力潜在于良善中;不过,这能力若不通过真理就无法行使出来。如此行使的能力是实际的能力,因而是提供支撑的能力。
  此外,座对应于人的脚和脚底;一般对应于给身体的一切肌肉提供支撑的骨骼;“脚”和“骨头”同样表示提供支撑的真理;身体的肌肉则表示通过真理支撑自己的良善。自然层面或自然界中的一切事物都类似人的形式,和它们所类似它的部分具有相同的含义(参看9496节);“肉”表示良善(3813696878509127节);“脚”表示属世之物,因而表示从自己里面的良善拥有能力的真理(53275328节);“身体”表示良善(6135节);“骨头”表示提供支撑的真理(3812e,8005节)。
  也正因如此,“根基”,就是一般的底座,表示信之真理,以及信本身,这从圣言中提到“根基”的经文可以看出来,如以赛亚书:
  你们岂不曾知道吗?你们岂不曾听见吗?你们岂没有明白地的根基吗?(以赛亚书40:21
  人若不知道“根基”表示什么,“地”表示什么,不可避免地认为此处“地的根基”是指地球内部的深处,尽管他若思考一下,就能意识到所表示的是其它某种东西;因为知道、听见并明白地的根基还能有什么含义呢?由此可见,“地的根基”表示诸如与教会有关的那类事物。在圣言中,“地”表示教会,这一点从圣言中提到“地”的经文很明显地看出来(参看9325节)。它的“根基”是指信之真理,因为这些真理作为根基而服务教会,这一点从下列经文也能进一步看出来。诗篇:

  摇摇欲坠的,不是地的根基,而是那些不承认,也不明白,在黑暗中走来走去之人那里的教会真理,这是显而易见的。又:
  地就摇撼战抖;山的根基也震动摇撼。(诗篇18:7
  “山”是指爱之良善(795421064358327节),它们的“根基”是指信之真理。以赛亚书:
  高处的水闸都开了,地的根基也震动了。(以赛亚书24:18
  由于“根基”表示信之真理,“城”表示基于它的教义,所以当所表示的是教义的真理时,圣言就会论到“城的根基”。“城”表示基于真理的教义(参看40224492943321644924493节)。
  由此可见在启示录中,“圣耶路撒冷城的根基”表示什么:
  圣耶路撒冷的城墙有十二根基,根基上有羔羊十二使徒的名字。城墙的根基是用各样宝石修饰的。(启示录21:141920
  人若不知道“圣耶路撒冷”、“城”、“城墙”、“根基”、“十二使徒”分别表示什么,根本看不见此处所隐藏的任何奥秘。然而,“圣耶路撒冷”表示主的新教会,它将要取代我们当今的教会;“城”表示教义;“城墙”表示进行保护和防卫的真理;“根基”表示信之真理;“十二使徒”表示整体上一切爱之良善和信之真理。由此可见为何经上说“有十二根基”,并且它们要“用各样宝石修饰”;因为“宝石”表示源于爱之良善的信之真理(114385866409476节);“十二使徒”表示整体上爱和信的一切事物或方面(34883858e,6397节)。
  由此明显可知启示录的这几节经文中的“根基”,以及以赛亚书中的“根基”表示什么:
  看哪,我必以彩色安置你的石头,以蓝宝石立定你的根基。(以赛亚书54:11
  “蓝宝石”是指内层真理(9407节)。同一先知书:
  耶和华必用杖击打亚述人。那时,每打一下,耶和华必使他安息在根基的杖上。(以赛亚书30:3132
  “根基的杖”是指真理的能力。“杖”表示能力(参看4013401548764936694770117026节)。耶利米书:
  人必不从你那里取石头为房角石,也不取石头为根基。(耶利米书51:26
  “为根基的石头”表示信之真理。
  约伯记:

9643. And thou shalt make forty bases of silver. That this signifies full support by means of truth, is evident from the signification of "forty," as being what is full (see n. 9437); from the signification of "bases," as being support, for bases support; and from the signification of "silver," as being truth (n. 1551, 2954, 5658, 6112, 6914, 6917, 7999). The reason why the bases were of "silver," and the planks were overlaid with "gold," was that by the "planks" is signified good, and by the "bases" truth, and good has power and thus support through truth (that good has power through truth, see n. 6344, 6423, 9327, 9410; also that "gold" signifies good, and "silver" truth, n. 113, 1551, 1552, 5658, 6914, 6917, 8932, 9490, 9510). That good has power through truth, is because truth is the form of good, and good has quality thereby; for where there is quality, there is form. In this way good has that whereby it can work on other things in this or in that manner. From this it is that good has ability, but not determined to anything except by means of truth. Ability determined is actual power, consequently is supporting power. [2] Moreover, the bases correspond to the feet and soles of the feet in man; and in general to the bones which support all the fleshy part of the body; and by "the feet" and "the bones" in like manner is signified the truth which supports; and by "the fleshy part" in the body is signified the good which supports itself by means of truth. (That all things in nature bear relation to the human form, and have a signification in accordance with their relation to it, see n. 9496; also that "flesh" signifies good, n. 3813, 6968, 7850, 9127; that "the feet" denote what is natural, thus truth in power from good, n. 5327, 5328; that "the body" signifies good, n. 6135; and "the bones," truth supporting, n. 3812e, 8005.) [3] It is for this reason also that a "foundation," which is a common base, denotes the truth of faith, and faith itself, as can be seen from the passages in the Word where a "foundation" is spoken of; as in Isaiah:

Do ye not know? Do ye not hear? Do ye not understand the foundations of the earth? (Isa. 40:21). He who does not know what is signified by a "foundation," and what by "the earth," has no other idea than that the lowest parts of the earth are here meant by "the foundations of the earth," although he may perceive, if he pays attention, that something else is meant; for what would it be to know, to hear, and to understand the foundations of the earth ? From this it can be seen that by "the foundations of the earth" are signified such things as belong to the church. That "the earth" in the Word denotes the church, is very evident from the passages in the Word where "the earth" is mentioned (see what has been cited above, n. 9325); and that its "foundations" denote the truths of faith, for these truths serve the church for foundations, as can also be seen further from the following passages. In David:

They acknowledge not, neither do they understand; they walk in darkness; all the foundations of the earth totter (Ps. 82:5);

that the foundations of the earth do not "totter," but the truths of the church with those who do not know, who do not understand, and who walk in darkness, is clear. Again:

The earth was shaken and quaked, and the foundations of the mountains were agitated, and were shaken (Ps. 18:7);

where "mountains" denote the goods of love (n. 795, 4210, 6435, 8327), and their "foundations," the truths of faith. And in Isaiah:

The cataracts from on high have been opened, and the foundations of the earth have quaked (Isa. 24:18);

As a "foundation" denotes the truth of faith, and a "city," the doctrine of it, therefore in the Word "the foundations of the city" is said when the truth of doctrine is meant; as in David:

The channels of waters appeared, and the foundations of the city* were uncovered, by the rebuke of Jehovah (Ps. 18:15). (That a "city" denotes the doctrine of truth, see n. 402, 2449, 2943, 3216, 4492, 4493). [4] From this it can be seen what is signified by "the foundations of the city of the holy Jerusalem" in John:

The wall of the city of the holy Jerusalem had twelve foundations, and in them the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. The foundations of the wall were adorned with every precious stone (Rev. 21:14-20). He who does not know what is signified by "the holy Jerusalem," what by a "city," what by a "wall," what by a "foundation," and what by "the twelve apostles," can see nothing of the secret here hidden; when yet by "the holy Jerusalem" is meant the New Church of the Lord which will succeed this of ours; by "the city" is meant doctrine; by a "wall," the truth protecting and defending; by "the foundations," the truths of faith; and by "the twelve apostles," all the goods of love and truths of faith in the complex. From this it can be seen why it is said that there will be "twelve foundations," and that they will be "adorned with every precious stone; for a "precious stone" denotes the truth of faith from the good of love (n. 114, 3858, 6640, 9476); and "the twelve apostles" denote all things of love and faith in the complex (n. 3488, 3858, 6397). [5] From this it is evident what is here signified by "foundations" in Isaiah:

Behold, I set thy stones with antimony,** and lay thy foundations with sapphires (Isa. 54:11);

where "sapphires" denote interior truths (n. 9407). In the same:

Jehovah shall smite Asshur with a rod. Then shall be every passing of the rod of the foundation, upon which Jehovah shall cause him to rest (Isa. 30:31, 32);

"the rod of the foundation" denotes the power of truth (that a "rod" denotes power, see n. 4013, 4015, 4876, 4936, 6947, 7011, 7026). And in Jeremiah:

They shall not take from thee a stone for a corner, nor a stone of foundations (Jer. 51:26);

where "a stone of foundations" denotes the truths of faith. [6] In Job:

Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? Declare if thou knowest intelligence; who hath appointed the measures thereof, if thou knowest? Upon what were its bases? or who laid the cornerstone thereof? when the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God sounded (Job 38:4-7)? He who does not know what is signified in the internal sense by "the earth," by "the measures thereof," and by "the bases," also what by a "cornerstone," "morning stars," and "the sons of God," sees nothing of the secret therein, believing that it is the earth which is meant, and also its foundation, measures, bases, and corner stone; and knowing not at all what is signified by "the morning stars singing," and by "the sons of God sounding." But he will come out of darkness into light as soon as he knows that "the earth" denotes the church; that its "foundations" denote the truth of faith; its "measures," states of good and truth; its "bases," the supporting truths themselves; "the cornerstone," the power of truth; "the morning stars," the knowledges of good and truth derived from good; and "the sons of God," truths Divine. The latter are said "to sound" when they come into existence, and the former "to sing" when they arise. * Here urbis, city; but in n. 8286 and 9818, orbis, world. ** In n. 1298, "carbuncle."

9643. 'And forty bases of silver' means complete support received through truth. This is clear from the meaning of 'forty' as completeness, dealt with in 9437; from the meaning of 'bases' as support, since bases serve as supports; and from the meaning of 'silver' as truth, dealt with in 1551, 2954, 5658, 6112, 6914, 6917, 7999. The bases were made from silver and the boards overlaid with gold because good is meant by 'the boards', 9634, and truth by 'the bases', and good possesses power and on this account lends support through truth. As regards good, that it possesses power through truth, see 6344, 6423, 9327, 9410, and that 'gold' means good and 'silver' truth, 113, 1551, 1552, 5658, 6914, 6917, 8932, 9490, 9510. Good possesses power through truth because truth gives shape to good, which means that good also possesses specific quality; for outward shape exists where specific quality does so. The good can then be a real influence among things, in one way or another. So it is that the ability resides potentially in good, but that this cannot be exercised except through truth. Ability so exercised is actual power, consequently power that provides support.

[2] Bases also correspond to a person's feet and soles of the feet; in general they correspond to the bones, which lend support to all the fleshy parts in the body. By the feet and likewise the bones truth that provides support is meant, and by the fleshy parts in the body good which supports itself by means of truth.

All things on the natural level resemble the human form, and carry the same meaning as the parts of it they resemble, see 9496. 'Flesh' means good, 3813, 6968, 7850, 9127. 'Feet' means the natural, thus truth that has power from good within it, 5327, 5328. 'Body' means good, 6135. 'Bones' means truth that provides support, 3812 (end), 8005.

[3] So it is also that by 'foundations', which are a general base, the truth of faith and faith itself are meant, as becomes clear from places in the Word where 'foundations' are mentioned, for example in Isaiah,

Do you not know, do you not hear, do you not understand the foundations of the earth? Isa 40:21.

A person unacquainted with what 'the foundations' and what 'the earth' mean inevitably takes 'the foundations of the earth' here to denote the inner depths of the planet, even though he may realize, if he stops to think about it, that something other than them is meant; for what meaning can knowing, hearing, and understanding the foundations of the earth have? From this it becomes clear that by 'the foundations of the earth' such things as have to do with the Church are meant. The fact that 'the earth' in the Word means the Church is plainly evident from places in the Word where 'the earth' is mentioned, see those quoted in 9325. And the fact that its foundations are the truths of faith, for these truths serve the Church as foundations, becomes clearer still from the following places: In David,

They do not acknowledge, neither do they understand; they walk in darkness. All the foundations of the earth are unstable. Ps 82:5.

It is not the foundations of the earth that are unstable but, as is self-evident, it is the truths of the Church with those who neither acknowledge nor understand them and walk in darkness. In the same author,

The earth quaked and trembled, and the foundations of the mountains shook and quaked. Ps 18:7.

'The mountains' are forms of the good of love, 795, 4210, 6435, 8327, their 'foundations' are the truths of faith. In Isaiah,

The floodgates from on high have been opened, and the foundations of the earth have been shaken. Isa 24:18.

Since 'the foundations' means the truth of faith, and 'city' doctrine based on it, therefore also the Word speaks of 'the foundations of the city' when the truth of doctrine is meant. For the meaning of 'city' as doctrinal teachings based on truth, see 402, 2449, 2943, 3216, 4492, 4493.

[4] This goes to show what the meaning is of 'the foundations of the city, the holy Jerusalem' in John,

The wall of the city, the holy Jerusalem, had twelve foundations, and on them the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. The foundations of the wall of the city were adorned with every kind of precious stone. Rev 21:14, 19, 20.

A person unacquainted with what 'the holy Jerusalem', 'the city', 'the wall', 'the foundations', and 'the twelve apostles' mean cannot see any arcanum at all that lies within this description. Nevertheless 'the holy Jerusalem' means the Lord's New Church which will take the place of the one that is ours at the present day;a 'the city' doctrinal teachings; 'the wall' the truth protecting and defending, and 'its foundations' the truths of faith; and 'the twelve apostles' all forms of the good of love and the truths of faith in their entirety. From this it becomes clear why it says that there will be twelve foundations, adorned with every kind of precious stone; for 'precious stone' means the truth of faith springing from the good of love, 114, 3858, 6640, 9476, and 'the twelve apostles' all aspects of love and faith in their entirety, 3488, 3858 (end), 6397.

[5] From all this it is evident what is meant by 'the foundations' in those verses in John and also by 'the foundations' in Isaiah,

Behold, I am arranging your stones with antimony, and will lay your foundations in sapphires. Isa 54:11.

'Sapphires' are interior truths, 9407. In the same prophet,

Jehovah will strike Asshur with a rod. At that time every strokeb will be that of the rod of the foundation on which Jehovah will cause [him] to rest. Isa 30:31, 32.

'The rod of the foundation' is the power of truth. For the meaning of 'the rod' as power, see 4013, 4015, 4876, 4936, 6947, 7011, 7026. And in Jeremiah,

They shall not take from you a stone for a corner, nor a stone for foundations. Jer 51:26.

'A stone for foundations' stands for the truths of faith.

Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Tell Me, if you have understanding.c Who determined the measures of it, if you know? Onto what [were] its bases [fastened]? Or who laid its corner-stone, when the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God bellowed? Job 38:4-7.

A person unacquainted with what 'the earth', 'its measures', and 'its bases' mean in the internal sense, and also what 'corner-stone', 'morning stars', and 'the sons of God' mean, sees no arcanum at all in this description. He will suppose that the actual earth, and also the foundations, measures, bases, and corner-stone of it are what is meant. Nor will he have any idea at all of what is meant by 'the morning stars sang' and 'the sons of God bellowed'. But a person will pass from darkness to light if he knows that 'the earth' is the Church, 'its foundations' are the truth of faith, 'its measures' the state of good and truth, 'its bases' the actual truths that provide support, 'the corner-stone' the power of truth, 'the morning stars' cognitions or knowledge of good and of truth springing from good, and 'the sons of God' God's truths. These sons are said 'to bellow' when they come into existence, those stars 'to sing' when they rise.
