Potts(1905-1910) 9476

9476. Onyx stones and stones for filling. That this signifies spiritual truths and goods in general, is evident from the signification of "onyx stones," as being the truths of faith that are from love, or spiritual truths; for the truths of faith which are from love are spiritual truths; and from the signification of "stones for filling," as being the goods of faith, or spiritual goods. That "stones for filling" denote the goods of faith, and "onyx stones" the truths of faith, is because the stones for filling were for the breastplate, and by "the breast plate" upon the ephod was signified the good of faith, or spiritual good; but the onyx stones were upon the shoulders of the ephod, and by "the shoulders" of the ephod are signified the truths of faith, or spiritual truths. (That by precious stones in the Word are signified the truths and goods of faith, or spiritual truths and goods, see n. 114, 643, 3858, 6335, 6640.) And as the truths and goods of faith are signified by precious stones, intelligence and wisdom are also signified by them, for intelligence is from the truths of faith, and wisdom is from the goods of faith. So in Ezekiel:

Full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty, thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the ruby, the topaz, the diamond, the tarshish, the onyx (Ezek. 28:12, 13, 15);

speaking of the king of Tyre, by whom is signified intelligence from the knowledges of the truth of faith (n. 1201).

Elliott(1983-1999) 9476

9476. 'Shoham stones, and stones of fillings' means spiritual truths and forms of good in general. This is clear from the meaning of 'shoham stones' as truths of faith that spring from love, or spiritual truths since the truths of faith that spring from love are spiritual truths; and from the meaning of 'stones of fillings' as forms of the good of faith, or spiritual forms of good. The reason why forms of the good of faith are meant by 'stones of fillings' and the truths of faith by 'shoham stones' is that the stones of fillings were for the breastplate, and 'the breastplate' on the ephod meant the good of faith or spiritual good, whereas the shoham stones went on the shoulder-pieces of the ephod, and by 'the shoulder-pieces of the ephod' the truths of faith or spiritual truths are meant. For the meaning of precious stones in the Word as the truths and forms of the good of faith, or spiritual truths and forms of good, see 114, 643, 3858, 6335, 6640. And since the truths and forms of the good of faith are meant by precious stones, intelligence and wisdom are also meant by them; for intelligence grows out of the truths of faith, and wisdom out of forms of the good of faith. Such is the meaning in Ezekiel,

Full of wisdom and perfect in beauty, you were in Eden, the garden of God. Every precious stone was your covering - ruby, topaz, diamond, tarshish, shoham. Ezek 28:12, 13, 15.

This refers to the king of Tyre, by whom intelligence that grows out of cognitions or knowledge of the truth of faith is meant, 1201.

9476. `Lapides schoham, et lapides impletionum': quod significet vera et bona spiritualia in genere, constat ex significatione `lapidum schoham' quod sint vera fidei quae ex amore, seu vera spiritualia, nam vera fidei quae ex amore sunt vera spiritualia, et ex significatione `lapidum impletionum' quod sint bona fidei, seu bona spiritualia; quod `lapides impletionum' sint bona fidei, et `lapides schoham' sint vera fidei, est quia lapides impletionum erant pro pectorali, et per pectorale super ephodo significabatur bonum fidei seu bonum spirituale; at lapides schoham erant super umeris ephodi, et per `umeros ephodi' {1}significantur vera fidei seu vera spiritualia; quod per lapides pretiosos in Verbo significentur vera et bona fidei, seu vera et bona spiritualia, videatur n. 114, 643, 3858, 6335, 6640; et quia vera et bona fidei significantur per lapides pretiosos, etiam per illos significatur intelligentia et sapientia, nam intelligentia est ex veris fidei, et sapienti ex bonis fidei; {2}ita apud Ezechielem, Plenus sapientia, et perfectus pulchritudine; in Eden horto Dei fuisti, omnis lapis pretiosus operimentum tuum, rubinus, topazius adamas, tarshish, schoham, xxviii 12, 13, 15;
