  9010.“乃是神使它在他手上发生”表看似偶然发生的事。这从古人对偶然的观念清楚可知,这种观念就是,凡所发生的事都是从神那里发生的;这就是为何他们以“神使它在他手上发生”这句话来表达偶然的观念。因为那些属于古代教会的人都知道,主的天意(Providence of the Lord)存在于每一个事物中;偶发事件,也就是看似偶然发生的事,都是天意。因此,看不出主允许发生的事和主乐意发生的事之间的区别的简单人会将良善和邪恶都归于主;将良善归于主,是因为他们知道一切良善皆来自祂;但将邪恶归于主则是由于表象。因为当一个人行恶,并由此使自己转离主时,表面上看,似乎是主转离;这时,主在他看来是在他后面,而不是在他前面。正因如此,如果有人碰巧或偶然击中另一个人,也就是说,他的行为没有事先考虑这一行为,经上就用“神使它在他手上发生”来表达它。主的天意在每一个事物中(参看1919e,43295122e,515551955894e,60586481-6487648964917004700784788717节);偶发事件,或偶然发生的事都是天意(550864936494节);邪恶被归于主,而事实上它起源于人(2447579860716832699169977533787779268197822782288282828484838632节)。

9010. But God caused it to happen to his hand. That this signifies appearing as of chance, is evident from the idea concerning chance among the ancients, which was that it happened from God; and therefore they expressed the idea of chance by the phrase, "God caused it to happen to the hand." For they who were of the ancient churches knew that the Providence of the Lord is in each and all things, and that things which happen, that is, which appear as of chance, were of Providence. Wherefore the simple, who could not distinguish between the things which were of permission, and those which were of good pleasure, attributed to the Lord both good and evil; good because they knew that all good is from Him; and evil by reason of the appearance. For when a man does evils, and thereby turns himself away from the Lord, it appears as if the Lord turns Himself away; for the Lord then appears to him behind, and not in front. From this then it is that if anyone smote another by chance, thus without will from foresight, it was expressed by the words, "God caused it to happen to the hand." 9010. 'And God caused it to happen at his hand' means appearing as something happening by chance. This is clear from ancient people's idea of chance, which was that whatever happened was brought about by God; and this was why they expressed the idea of chance by saying that 'God caused it to happen at someone's hand'. Those who belonged to the ancient Churches knew that the Lord's providence was present in every single thing, and that contingencies, that is, things which appeared to happen by chance, were providential. Simple people therefore who could see no difference between things that happened because He permitted them and those that happened because He was well pleased by them attributed to the Lord both good and evil, good because they knew that He was the author of everything good, but evil on account of the appearance. For when a person performs evil deeds, and by performing them turns away from the Lord, the appearance is that the Lord turns away; at this time the Lord appears to him to be behind, not in front of him. These then are the reasons why if anyone struck another by chance, that is, his will had not contemplated the deed beforehand, the words 'God caused it to happen at his hand' were used to express it.
