Heaven and Hell #46 (NCE, 2000)

46. Further, people of similar quality all recognize each other there just the way people in this world recognize their neighbors and relatives and friends, even though they may never have seen each other before. This happens because the only relationships and kinships and friendships in the other life are spiritual ones, and are therefore matters of love and faith. 1

I have often been allowed to see this when I was in the spirit and therefore out of body and in the company of angels. Then some of them looked to me as though I had known them from infancy, while others seemed totally unfamiliar. The ones who looked as though I had known them from infancy were the ones who were in a state like that of my own spirit, while the unfamiliar ones were in dissimilar states.

Footnotes:

1. In heaven, all matters of proximity, family, kindred, and apparent blood relationship arise from what is good and depend on its affinities and differences: Arcana Coelestia 695 [685], 917, 1394, 2739, 3612, 3815, 4121.

Heaven and Hell #46 (Harley, 1958)

46. Again, all who are in like good, even though they have never seen one another before, recognize one another just as men in the world do their kinsmen, relatives and friends. This is because in the other life there are none but spiritual kinships, relationships and friendships, thus such as are of love and faith. 1It has been granted me to see this sometimes, when I have been in the spirit, thus withdrawn from the body and so in the company of angels. Then some of these I saw seemed as though known to me from childhood, but others as if not known at all. Those whom I seemed to have known from childhood were such as were in a state similar to that of my spirit, but those who seemed unknown were in a dissimilar state.

Footnotes:

1. All kinships, relationships, connections, and as it were those related by blood, in heaven, are from good, and according to its agreements and differences (Arcana Coelestia 685, 917, 1394, 2739, 3612, 3815, 4121).

Heaven and Hell #46 (Ager, 1900)

46. Again, all who are in like good, even though they have never seen each other before, know each other, just as men in the world do their kinsmen, near relations, and friends; and for the reason that in the other life there are none but spiritual kinships, relationships, and friendships, thus such as spring from love and faith. 1This it has sometimes been granted me to see, when I have been in the spirit, and thus withdrawn from the body, and in the society of angels. Some of those I then saw seemed as if I had known them from childhood, but others as if not known at all. Those whom I seemed to have known from childhood were such as were in a state similar to that of my spirit; but those who seemed unknown were in a dissimilar state.

Footnotes:

1. All nearness, relationship, connections, and as it were ties of blood, in heaven are from good and in accordance with its agreements and differences (Arcana Coelestia 685, 917, 1394, 2739, 3612, 3815, 4121).

De Coelo et de Inferno #46 (original Latin)
