Heaven and Hell #33 (NCE, 2000)

33. It needs to be quite clear that it is the inner nature of angels that determines which heaven they are in. The more the deeper levels have been opened, the more inward the heaven they are in. There are three inner levels of every angel and spirit, and of every person here as well. The people whose third level has been opened are in the central heaven, while the people whose second or first only has been opened are in the intermediate or the outmost heaven.

The deeper levels are opened by our acceptance of divine good and divine true gifts. People who are actually affected by divine true gifts and let them directly into their lives - into their intentions and therefore into act - are in the central or third heaven, located there according to their acceptance of what is good in response to truth. People who do not let such gifts directly into their intentions, but into their memory and from there into their discernment, intending and doing them as a result of this process, are in the intermediate or second heaven. People who live good moral lives, though, and believe in the Divine with no particular interest in learning, are in the outmost or first heaven. 1We may therefore conclude that the state of our inner natures is what constitutes heaven and that heaven is within each one of us, not outside us. This is what the Lord teaches in saying,

The kingdom of God does not arrive when we are looking for it, nor do they say, "Here it is," or "There it is." Behold, you have the kingdom of God within you. (Luke 17:20-21)

Footnotes:

1. There are as many levels of life within the human individual as there are heavens, and these are opened after death depending on the way the individual has lived: 3747, 9594. Heaven is within us: 3884. So people who have accepted heaven within themselves in the world enter heaven after death: 10717.

Heaven and Hell #33 (Harley, 1958)

33. It ought to be clearly understood that with the angels it is their interiors which cause them to be in one heaven or another. For, the more their interiors are open towards the Lord, the more interior is the heaven in which they are. There are three degrees of the interiors with each angel as well as with each spirit, and also with man. Those with whom the third degree has been opened are in the inmost heaven. Those with whom the second degree has been opened, or only the first, are in the middle or in the outermost heaven. The interiors are opened by the reception of Divine Good and Divine Truth. Those who are affected by Divine truths and admit them at once into their life, thus into their will and thence into action, are in the inmost or third heaven, and have their place in accordance with their reception of good from the affection of truth. Those, however, who do not admit truths at once into the will but into the memory and thence into the understanding, and who, from this, will and do them, are in the middle or second heaven. But, those who live morally and believe in a Divine Being, but do not care greatly about being taught, are in the outermost or first heaven. 1From this it can be confirmed that the states of the interiors make heaven and that heaven is within everyone and not outside him, as the Lord teaches when He says,

The kingdom of God cometh not with observation, neither shall they say, Lo here or Lo there, for behold, the kingdom of God ye have within you. Luke 17:20-21.

Footnotes:

1. There are as many degrees of life in man as there are heavens, and these are opened after death in accordance with his life (Arcana Coelestia 3747, 9594).

Heaven is in man (Arcana Coelestia 3884).

Therefore he who has received heaven into himself in the world, comes into heaven after death (Arcana Coelestia 10717).

Heaven and Hell #33 (Ager, 1900)

33. Let it be clearly understood that with the angels it is the interiors that cause them to be in one heaven or another; for as their interiors are more open to the Lord they are in a more interior heaven. There are three degrees of interiors in each angel and spirit, and also in man. Those in whom the third degree is opened are in the inmost heaven. Those in whom the second degree is opened, or only the first, are in the middle or in the outmost heaven. The interiors are opened by reception of Divine good and Divine truth. Those who are affected by Divine truths and admit them at once into the life, thus into the will and into action therefrom, are in the inmost or third heaven, and have their place there in accordance with their reception of good from affection for truth. Those who do not admit truths at once into the will but into the memory, and thence into the understanding, and from the understanding will and do them, are in the middle or second heaven. But those who live morally and who believe in a Divine, and who care very little about being taught, are in the outmost or first heaven. 1From this it is clear that the states of the interiors are what make heaven, and that heaven is within everyone, and not outside of him; as the Lord teaches when He says:

The kingdom of God cometh not with observation, neither shall they say, Lo here, or Lo there; for behold the kingdom of God ye have within you (Luke 17:20, 21).

Footnotes:

1. There are as many degrees of life in man as there are heavens, and these are opened after death in accordance with his life (Arcana Coelestia 3747, 9594).

Heaven is in man (3884).

Therefore he that has received heaven into himself in the world, comes into heaven after death in Arcana Coelestia 10717).

De Coelo et de Inferno #33 (original Latin)
