Heaven and Hell #180 (NCE, 2000)

180. Since angels wear clothes in heaven, they have appeared clothed when they were seen in our world, like the ones seen by the prophets and the ones by the Lord's tomb, whose "appearance was like lightning and whose clothes were gleaming and white" (Matthew 28:3, Mark 16:5, Luke 22:4, 24:4, John 20:11-12, 13) and the ones seen in heaven by John whose "garments were of linen and white" (Revelation 4:4; 19:11, 13). And since intelligence comes from divine truth, the Lord's garments, when he was transfigured, were "gleaming and white as light" (Matthew 17:2, Mark 9:3, Luke 9:29: on light as divine truth emanating from the Lord, see 129 above). This is why garments in the Word mean things true and the intelligence that results from them, as in John: "Those who have not defiled their garments will walk with me in white, because they are worthy; whoever overcomes will be clothed with white garments" (Revelation 3:4-5); and "Blessed are those who are watchful and take care of their garments" (Revelation 16:15).

Concerning Jerusalem, meaning the church as it is focused on what is true, 1it says in Isaiah, "Rise up, put on your strength, O Zion; put on the garments of your beauty, O Jerusalem" (Isaiah 52:1); and in Ezekiel, "O Jerusalem, I have clothed you with linen, I have veiled you with silk, your garments are linen and silk" (Ezekiel 16:10, 13); and many other passages.

In contrast, someone who is not engaged with truths is said not to be wearing a wedding garment, as in Matthew: "When the king came in, he saw the one not wearing a wedding garment and said, 'Friend, how have you come in here without a wedding garment?' So that one was cast out into the outer darkness" (Matthew 22:11-13). The wedding house means heaven and the church by virtue of the Lord's union with them through his divine truth. This is why in the Word the Lord is called the Bridegroom and Husband, and heaven and the church the bride and wife.

Footnotes:

1. Jerusalem means the church where there is genuine doctrine: 402, 3654, 9166.

Heaven and Hell #180 (Harley, 1958)

180. Because the angels are clothed with garments in heaven, so when seen in the world they have appeared clothed with garments, as those seen by the prophets and also those seen at the Lord's sepulchre,

Whose appearance was as lightning, and their garments glistening and white. Matthew 28:3; Mark 16:5; Luke 24:4; John 20:12-13.

And those seen in heaven by John,

Who had garments of fine linen and white. Revelation 4:4; 19:14.

And because intelligence is from Divine Truth,

The garments of the Lord, when He was transfigured, were radiant and glistening white like the light. Matthew 17:2; Mark 9:3; Luke 9:29.

As light is Divine Truth going forth from the Lord (see above 129) so, in the Word, garments signify truths, and intelligence from truths, as in John,

Those that have not defiled their garments . . . shall walk with Me in white, for they are worthy. He that overcometh shall be clothed in white garments. Revelation 3:4-5.

Blessed is he that is awake and keepeth his garments. Revelation 16:15.

And of Jerusalem which means a Church that is in truth, 1it is written in Isaiah,

Awake, put on thy strength, O Zion; put on the garments of thy beauty, O Jerusalem. Isaiah 52:1.

And in Ezekiel,

Jerusalem, I girded thee about with fine linen, and covered thee with silk. . . . Thy garments were of fine linen and silk. Ezekiel 16:10, 13.

Besides many other passages.

But he who is not in truths is said not to be clothed with a wedding garment, as in Matthew,

When the king came in... he saw a man that had not on a wedding garment; and he said unto him, "Friend, how camest thou in hither not having a wedding garment?"

Wherefore he was cast out into outer darkness. Matthew 22:12,13.

The house of the wedding feast means heaven and the Church, because of the conjunction of the Lord with heaven and the Church by means of His Divine Truth. Wherefore, in the Word, the Lord is called the Bridegroom and Husband; and heaven, with the Church, is called the bride and wife.

Footnotes:

1. "Jerusalem" signifies the Church where there is genuine doctrine (Arcana Coelestia 402, 3654, 9166).

Heaven and Hell #180 (Ager, 1900)

180. As in heaven the angels are clothed with garments, so when seen in the world they have appeared clothed with garments, as those seen by the prophets and those seen at the Lord's sepulchre:

Whose appearance was as lightning, and their garments glistening and white (Matthew 28:3; Mark 16:5; Luke 24:4; John 20:12, 13);

and those seen in heaven by John:

Who had garments of fine linen and white (Revelation 4:4; Revelation 19:14).

And because intelligence is from Divine truth:

The garments of the Lord, when He was transfigured, were radiant and glistening white like the light (Matthew 17:2; Mark 9:3; Luke 9:29).

As light is Divine truth going forth from the Lord (see above (Heaven and Hell 129), 129), so in the Word garments signify truths and intelligence from truths, as in the Apocalypse:

Those that have not defiled their garments shall walk with Me in white, for they are worthy. He that overcometh shall be clothed in white garments (Apocalypse 3:4, 5);

Blessed is he that is awake and keepeth his garments (Apocalypse 16:15).

And of Jerusalem, which means a church that is in truth, 1it is written in Isaiah:

Awake, put on thy strength, O Zion; put on the garments of thy beauty, O Jerusalem (Isaiah 52:1).

And in Ezekiel:

Jerusalem, I girded thee about with fine linen, and covered thee with silk. Thy garments were of fine linen and silk (16: 10, 13);

besides many other passages. But he who is not in truths is said "not to be clothed with a wedding garment," as in Matthew:

When the king came in he saw a man that had not on a wedding garment; and he said unto him, Friend, how camest thou in hither not having a wedding garment? Wherefore he was cast out into the outer darkness (Matthew 22:11-13).

The house of the wedding feast means heaven and the church because of the conjunction of the Lord with heaven and the church by means of His Divine truth; and for this reason the Lord is called in the Word the Bridegroom and Husband; and heaven, with the church, is called the bride and the wife.

Footnotes:

1. "Jerusalem" signifies a church in which there is genuine doctrine (402, 3654, 9166).

De Coelo et de Inferno #180 (original Latin)

"Qui non polluerunt vestimenta sua, ambulabunt Mecum in albis quia digni sunt qui vicerit, is induetur vestimentis albis," (Apocalypsis 3:4-5);

"Excitare, indue robur Zion, indue vestes decoris tui Hierosolyma," (52:1):

et apud Ezechielem,

Hierosolyma, "accinxi te bysso, et velavi te serico,... vestes tuae byssus et sericum," (Ezechiel 16:10, 13):

praeter alibi pluries.
