Potts(1905-1910) 4982

4982. Was upon all that he had in the house and in the field. That this signifies in life and in doctrine, is evident from the signification of "house," as being good (n. 2048, 2233, 2559, 3128, 3652, 3720), and because it signifies good, it signifies also life, for all good is of life; and from the signification of "field," as being the truth of the church (n. 368, 3508, 3766, 4440, 4443), and because it signifies the truth of the church, it signifies also doctrine, for all truth is of doctrine. "House" and "field" are occasionally mentioned in other parts of the Word, and when the subject treated of is the celestial man, by "house" is signified celestial good, and by "field" spiritual good. Celestial good is the good of love to the Lord, and spiritual good is the good of charity toward the neighbor. But when the spiritual man is treated of, by "house" is signified the celestial that is in him, which is the good of charity toward the neighbor; and by "field," the spiritual that is in him, which is the truth of faith. Both the one and the other are signified in Matthew: Let him that is upon the housetop not go down to take anything that is in his house, and let him that is in the field not return back to take his garment (Matt. 24:17-18; see n. 3652).

Elliott(1983-1999) 4982

4982. 'On all that he had in the house and in the field' means in life and in doctrine. This is clear from the meaning of 'the house' as good, dealt with in 2048, 2233, 2234, 2559, 3128, 3652, 3720, and as 'the house' means good it also means life, since all good is the good of life; and from the meaning of 'the field' as the Church's truth, dealt with in 368, 3508, 3766, 4440, 4443, and as this means the Church's truth it also means doctrine, for all truth is the truth of doctrine. House and field are also referred to several times in other parts of the Word, and when in such places the celestial man is the subject, 'house' means celestial good and 'field' spiritual good. In this case celestial good is the good of love to the Lord, and spiritual good is the good of charity towards the neighbour. But when the spiritual man is the subject 'house' means the celestial as it exists with him, which is the good of charity towards the neighbour, while 'field' means the spiritual as it exists with him, which is the truth of faith. 'The house' and 'the field' have the same meanings in Matthew,

Let him who is on the roof of the house not go down to take anything out of his house; and let him who is in the field not turn back to get his clothing. Matt 24:17, 18.

Latin(1748-1756) 4982

4982. `In omni quod erat illi in domo et in agro': quod significet in vita et in doctrina, constat ex significatione `domus' quod sit bonum, de qua n. 2048, 2233, 2234, 2559, 3128, 3652, 3720, et quia `domus' est bonum, etiam est vita, omne enim bonum est vitae; et ex significatione `agri' quod sit verum Ecclesiae, de qua n. 368, 3508, 3766, 4440, 4443; et quia est verum Ecclesiae, etiam est doctrina, omne enim verum est doctrinae. Alibi in Verbo aliquoties etiam domus et ager dicuntur, et cum ibi agitur de caelesti homine, per `domum' significatur bonum caeleste, et per `agrum' bonum spirituale; bonum caeleste est bonum amoris in Dominum, et bonum spirituale est bonum charitatis erga proximum; at cum de spirituali homine agitur, per `domum' significatur caeleste quod apud illum, quod est bonum charitatis erga proximum, et per `agrum' spirituale apud illum, quod est verum fidei; illa et haec significantur apud Matthaeum, Qui super tecto domus, ne descendat ad tollendum quid e domo sua; et qui in agro, ne revertatur retro ad accipiendum vestem suam, xxiv 17, 18;
