Potts(1905-1910) 2320

2320. Why there should here be only two angels, seeing that there were three men with Abraham, is an arcanum which cannot be set forth in few words. It can in some measure be seen from the fact that in this chapter Judgment is treated of, namely, the salvation of the faithful, and the condemnation of the unfaithful; and it is evident from the Word that Judgment belongs to the Lord's Divine Human and Holy proceeding. That it belongs to the Divine Human see in John: "The Father judgeth not anyone, but hath given all judgment unto the Son" (John 5:22); by the "Son" is meant the Divine Human (see n. 2159). That Judgment belongs to the Holy that proceeds from the Lord's Divine Human, see also in John: "If I go away, I will send the Comforter unto you; and when He is come, He shall reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment" (John 16:7-8); and that the Holy proceeds from the Lord, see in the same: "He shall not speak from Himself but shall take of Mine, and shall declare it" (John 16:13, 15); and this when the Human was made Divine, that is, when the Lord had been glorified, see in the same: "The Holy Spirit was not yet, because Jesus was not yet glorified" (John 7:39).

Elliott(1983-1999) 2320

2320. The reason there were only two angels on this occasion, whereas three men had stayed with Abraham, is an arcanum which cannot be explained in a few words. It does become clear to a certain extent from the consideration that in this chapter the subject is judgement, that is to say, the salvation of those who have faith and the condemnation of those who have not. It is also clear from the Word that judgement belongs to the Lord's Divine Human and His Holy proceeding. That it belongs to the Divine Human may be seen in John,

The Father does not judge anyone, but has given all judgement to the Son. John 5:-22.

'The Son' is used to mean the Divine Human, see 2159. That judgement belongs to the Holy proceeding from the Lord's Divine Human is also clear, again in John,

If I go away I will send the Paraclete to you; and when He comes He will convince the world in regard to sin and righteousness and judgement. John 16:-7, 8.

And that the Holy proceeds from the Lord is clear in the same gospel,

He will not speak from Himself but will receive it from what is Mine and declare it. John 16:-13, 15.

This referred to when the Human had become Divine, that is, when the Lord had been glorified, as is stated in the same gospel,

The Holy Spirit was not yet because Jesus was not yet glorified. John 7:-39.

Latin(1748-1756) 2320

2320. Cur hic modo bini angeli essent, cum apud Abrahamum tres viri, est arcanum quod paucis non potest exponi, constare potest aliquatenus ex eo quod in hoc capite agatur de judicio, nempe de salvatione fidelium et damnatione infidelium; et ex Verbo constat quod Divino Humano et Sancto procedenti Domini, sit {1} judicium; quod Divino Humano, apud Johannem, Non Pater judicat quemquam, sed judicium omne dedit Filio, v 22;

per `Filium' intelligitur Divinum Humanum, videatur n. 2559: quod Sancto procedenti a Domini Divino Humano judicium, etiam apud Johannem, Si abivero, mittam Paracletum ad vos; cumque venerit Ille {2}, arguet mundum de peccato, et de justitia, et de judicio, xvi 8;

et quod Sanctum procedat a Domino, apud eundem, Non loquetur ex se, sed de Meo accipiet, et annuntiabit xvi 13, 15;
