2268、“你就因为少了五个而毁灭全城吗”表示人类会因少了些许而灭亡吗?这从“五”和“城”的含义清楚可知:“五”是指一点或少许,如刚才所述;“城”是指真理,也如前所述(2252,2261节)。圣言将人类心智中的真理比作一座“城”,也称之为一座“城”;将存在于这真理里面的良善比作这城的居民,也称之为居民,因为两者彼此相似。在人的两种记忆和他心智思维中的真理若缺乏良善,就像一座没有居民的城,因而是空的,无人居住。事实上,论到天使,可以说,当一个人过着对主之爱和对邻之仁的生活时,他们可以说就住在他的真理里面,并植入来自主的对良善的情感,因为他们乐意如此居住,换句话说,他们喜欢生活在这些人中间。而那些拥有某些真理,却毫无仁之良善的人则截然不同。

2268. Wilt Thou destroy all the city for five? That this signifies shall man perish for the little which is wanting, is evident from the signification of "five" as being a little (as just stated); and from the signification of a "city," as being truth, also explained before. In regard to the truths in it the human mind is compared in the Word to a "city," and is also so called; and in regard to the goods which are in the truths, it is compared to the inhabitants of the city, and the goods are also so called; for the case as regards these is much the same. If the truths which are in man's memories, and in the thoughts of his mind, are devoid of goods, they are like a city without inhabitants, and are in the same way vacant and empty. Nay, even of the angels it may be declared that when a man lives in love to the Lord, and in charity toward the neighbor, they dwell as it were in his truths, and insinuate affections of good from the Lord; for they are delighted to dwell thus, that is, to live with such men. Very different is it with those who are in some truths, but in no goods of charity.

2268. 'Will You for five destroy the whole city?' means, Will mankind perish for the small amount that is lacking? This is clear from the meaning of 'five' as small, referred to immediately above, and from the meaning of 'a city' as truth, also dealt with already. The human mind as regards truths is in the Word compared to and also called 'a city', and as regards the goods that are present within truths is there compared to and also called 'the inhabitants'. For a similarity indeed exists, in that if the truths in a person's two memoriesa and in the thoughts of his mind are devoid of goods, they are like a city that has no residents and so is vacant and empty. Indeed it can also be said of angels that they dwell so to speak in a person's truths and implant affections for good from the Lord when that person leads a life abiding in love to the Lord and in charity towards the neighbour, for they are delighted so to dwell, that is, to live, with such persons. It is different in the case of those with whom some truths exist but no goods that flow from charity.
