[NCE]1849. The symbolism of also the nation they serve as the evil who oppress them can be seen from the symbolism of a nation and serving. In a positive sense, a nation symbolizes goodness or, to put it another way, good people. Although I mention goodness in the abstract, it exists in a being who feels it — a person on earth, a spirit, or an angel. In a negative sense, though, a nation symbolizes evil or, to put it another way, evil beings, as discussed at 1159, 1258, 1259, 1260.
Serving, however, or enslavement, symbolizes oppression, as in the last verse [1840, 1844-1845, 1846:2].

Potts(1905-1910) 1849

1849. And also that nation whom they shall serve. That this signifies the evil who oppress, is evident from the signification of a "nation" and of "serving." In the genuine sense a "nation" signifies goods, or what is the same, good persons; for when goods are spoken of in the abstract, they are in a subject; and this is a man, a spirit, or an angel. But in the opposite sense a "nation" signifies evils, or what is the same, the evil (see n. 1159, 1258-1260). But to "serve," or "servitude," signifies oppression, as in the preceding verse.

Elliott(1983-1999) 1849

1849. That 'the nation also which they are going to serve' means the evil who oppress is clear from the meaning of 'nation' and of 'serving'. In the genuine sense 'a nation' means goods, or what amounts to the same, those who are good, for when goods are thus spoken of abstractedly they still have reference to the subject, which is a man, spirit, or angel. In the contrary sense however 'nation' means evils, or what amounts to the same, those who are evil, dealt with in 1159, 1258-1260. 'Serving' however, or slavery, means oppression, as in the previous verse.
