[NCE]1260. Since nations symbolized good qualities or good people in the earliest church and in the ancient church, in the opposite sense they also symbolize bad qualities or bad people. By the same token, since peoples symbolized truth, in the opposite sense they also symbolize falsity. A perverted religion turns goodness into evil and truth into falsity. That is why the symbolism of nations and peoples is a negative one many times in the Word, as for instance in Isaiah 13:4; 14:6; 18:2, 7; 30:28; 34:1-2; Ezekiel 20:32; and many other places.

Potts(1905-1910) 1260

1260. Because in the Most Ancient and in the Ancient Church, nations signified goods, or good men, therefore in the opposite sense they signify evils, or evil men. In like manner peoples, because they signified truths, in the opposite sense signify falsities. For in a depraved church good is turned into evil, and truth into falsity. Hence comes the signification of "nations" and of "peoples" in this opposite sense in many places in the Word, as in Isaiah 13:4; 14:6; 18:2, 7; 30:28; 34:1-2; Ezek. 20:32; and in many other places.

Elliott(1983-1999) 1260

1260. Since 'nations' in the Most Ancient Church and in the Ancient Church meant goods or good persons, therefore also in the contrary sense they mean evils or evil persons Similarly with 'peoples'; since these meant truths, therefore also in the contrary sense they mean falsities For in a corrupted Church good is turned into evil, and truth into falsity, as a consequence of which the meaning of nations and peoples in that contrary sense occurs many times in the Word, as in Isa 13:4; 14:6; 18:2, 7; 30:28; 34:1, 2; Ezek 20:13; and in many other places.

Latin(1748-1756) 1260

1260. Quia 'gentes' in Antiquissima et in Antiqua Ecclesia significabant bona seu bonos, ideo quoque in sensu opposito significant mala seu malos; similiter 'populi' quia significabant vera, ideo quoque in sensu opposito significant falsa; in Ecclesia enim depravata bonum vertitur in malum, et verum in falsum, inde gentium et populorum significatio in hoc sensu multoties in Verbo, ut apud Esai. xiii 4; xiv 6; xviii 2, 7; xxx 28; xxxiv 1, 2; Ezech. xx 32, et pluries alibi.
