473、因为行为和作为来自意志和思想,故也来自爱和信,因此,它们的性质就是爱和信的性质。因为无论你说人的爱还是说人的意志,都是一回事;说人的信还是说人既定的思想,也都是一回事,因为人所爱的是他所意愿的,人所相信的是他所思想的。当人爱他所相信的事物时,他也会意愿它,并尽可能地行出来。每个人都能知道,爱和信在人的意志和思想内,而非在它们之外,因为意志就是被爱激发的东西,思想就是在信仰的问题上被启迪的东西。因此,只有那些能够明智思考的人才能被启迪,并在其被启迪的程度内,思想真理并意愿真理,或者说,相信真理并热爱真理。{注1}

Heaven and Hell #473 (NCE, 2000)

473. Since deeds and works are matters of intention and thought, they are also matters of love and faith to the point that their quality is the quality of their love and faith. That is, it amounts to the same thing whether you talk about our love or about our intentions, whether you talk about our established faith or about our thought, since what we love we also intend, and what we believe we also think. If we love what we believe, we intend it as well and do it to the extent that we can. Anyone can realize that love and faith dwell within our intentions and thought and not outside them, since intent is what is kindled by love and thought is what is enlightened in matters of faith. This means that only people who can think wisely are enlightened; and depending on their enlightenment they think what is true and intend what is true, they believe what is true and love what is true. 1

Footnotes:

1. Just as everything in the universe that occurs in an orderly fashion goes back to what is good and true, so everything in us goes back to volition and intellect: 803, 10122. This is because it is our volition that receives what is good and our intellect that receives what is true: 3332, 3623, 5332, 6065, 6125, 7503, 9300, 9930. It amounts to the same thing whether you talk about what is true or faith, since faith is a matter of truth and truth is a matter of faith; and it also amounts to the same thing whether you talk about what is good or love, since love is a matter of what is good, and what is good is a matter of love: 4353, 4997, 7178, 10122, 10367. So it follows that intellect is the recipient of faith and volition the recipient of love: 7178, 10122, 10367; and since our intellect can accept faith in God and our volition love for God, we can be united to God by faith and love; and anyone who can be united to God by faith and love cannot die forever: 4525, 6323, 9231.

Heaven and Hell #473 (Harley, 1958)

473. Because deeds and works are from the will and thought, so are they from the love and faith, consequently, they are such as the love and faith are; for it is the same thing whether you say a man's love or his will, and it is the same thing whether you say a man's faith or his established thought; for that which a man loves he wills, and that which a man believes he thinks. If a man loves what he believes he also wills it and as far as possible does it. Everyone can know that love and faith are within man's willing and thinking, and not outside them, for it is the will that is kindled with love, and the thought that is enlightened in matters of faith; therefore only those who are able to think wisely are enlightened, and in the measure of their enlightenment they think what is true and will it, or what is the same, they believe what is true and love it. 1

Footnotes:

1. As all things that exist according to order in the universe have relation to good and truth, so with man all things have relation to will and understanding (Arcana Coelestia 803, 10122).

For the reason that the will is a recipient of good and the understanding a recipient of truth (Arcana Coelestia 3332, 3623, 5232, 6065, 6125, 7503, 9300, 9995).

It amounts to the same whether you say truth or faith, for faith belongs to truth and truth belongs to faith; and it amounts to the same whether you say good or love, for love belongs to good and good belongs to love (Arcana Coelestia 4353, 4997, 7179, 10122, 10367).

From this it follows that the understanding is a recipient of faith, and the will a recipient of love (Arcana Coelestia 7179, 10122, 10367).

And since the understanding of man is capable of receiving faith in God and the will is capable of receiving love to God, man is capable of being conjoined with God in faith and love, and he who is capable of being conjoined with God in love and faith can never die (Arcana Coelestia 4525, 6323, 9231).

Heaven and Hell #473 (Ager, 1900)

473. As deeds and works are from the will and thought, so are they from the love and faith, consequently they are such as the love and faith are; for it is the same thing whether you say one's love or his will, and it is the same thing whether you say one's faith or his established thought; for that which a man loves he wills, and that which a man believes he thinks; and when a man loves what he believes he also wills it and as far as possible does it. Everyone may know that love and faith are within man's will and thought, and not outside of them, for love is what kindles the will, and the thought is what it enlightens in matters of faith; therefore only those that are able to think wisely are enlightened, and in the measure of their enlightenment they think what is true and will it, or what is the same, they believe what is true and love it. 1

Footnotes:

1. As all things that exist according to order in the universe have relation to good and truth, so in man all things have relation to will and understanding (Arcana Coelestia 803, 10122).

For the reason that the will is a recipient of good and the understanding a recipient of truth (3332, 3623, 5232, 6065, 6125, 7503, 9300, 9995).

It amounts to the same whether you say truth or faith, for faith belongs to truth and truth belongs to faith; and it amounts to the same whether you say good or love for love belongs to good and good belongs to love (4353, 4997, 7179, 10122, 10367).

From this it follows that the understanding is a recipient of faith, and the will a recipient of love (7179, 10122, 10367).

And since the understanding of man is capable of receiving faith in God and the will is capable of receiving love to God, man is capable of being conjoined with God in faith and love, and he that is capable of being conjoined with God in love and faith can never die (4525, 6323, 9231).

De Coelo et de Inferno #473 (original Latin)
