  445、当人的身体不能继续在尘世发挥功能以对应他的灵从灵界所获得的思想和情感时,就说这人要死了。当肺的呼吸和心脏的跳动停止时,{注1}就会发生这种情形。但这个人并没有死,只是脱离了在世上对他有用的肉体,人本身仍然活着。说人本身还活着是因为人之所以为人,不是因为他的身体,而是因为他的灵,正是人里面的灵在思考,思想和情感造就了人。因此,很明显,人死亡时,只是从一个世界转移到了另一个世界。这就是为什么在圣经的内义中,“死”表示复活和生命的延续。{注2}

Heaven and Hell #445 (NCE, 2000)

445. Our Revival from the Dead and Entry into Eternal Life

When someone's body can no longer perform its functions in the natural world in response to the thoughts and affections of its spirit (which it derives from the spiritual world), then we say that the individual has died. This happens when the lungs' breathing and the heart's systolic motion have ceased. The person, though, has not died at all. We are only separated from the physical nature that was useful to us in the world. The essential person is actually still alive. I say that the essential person is still alive because we are not people because of our bodies but because of our spirits. After all, it is the spirit within us that thinks, and thought and affection together make us the people we are.

We can see, then, that when we die we simply move from one world into another. This is why in the inner meaning of the Word, "death" means resurrection and a continuation of life. 1

Footnotes:

1. Death in the Word means resurrection because when we die, our life still goes on: 3498, 3505, 4618, 4621, 6036, 6222 [6221?].

Heaven and Hell #445 (Harley, 1958)

445. THE RESUSCITATION OF MAN FROM THE DEAD AND HIS ENTRANCE INTO ETERNAL LIFE

When the body is no longer able to perform its functions in the natural world corresponding to the thoughts and affections of his spirit which he has from the spiritual world, then man is said to die. This takes place when the respiration of the lungs and the beatings of the heart cease. But yet the man does not die; he is merely separated from the corporeal part that was of use to him in the world, for the man himself lives. It is said that the man himself lives, since man is not a man because of his body but because of his spirit, for it is the spirit in man that thinks, and thought with affection makes man. Hence it is clear that the man when he dies merely passes from one world into another. And this is why in the Word in its internal sense "death" signifies resurrection and continuation of life. 1

Footnotes:

1. In the Word "death" signifies resurrection, for when man dies his life still goes on (Arcana Coelestia 3498, 3505, 4618, 4621, 6036, 6221).

445. XLVI. THE RESUSCITATION OF MAN FROM THE DEAD AND HIS ENTRANCE INTO ETERNAL LIFE.

When the body is no longer able to perform the bodily functions in the natural world that correspond to the spirit's thoughts and affections, which the spirit has from the spiritual world, man is said to die. This takes place when the respiration of the lungs and the beatings of the heart cease. But the man does not die; he is merely separated from the bodily part that was of use to him in the world, while the man himself continues to live. It is said that the man himself continues to live since man is not a man because of his body but because of his spirit, for it is the spirit that thinks in man, and thought with affection is what constitutes man. Evidently, then, the death of man is merely his passing from one world into another.

De Coelo et de Inferno #445 (original Latin)

445. [XLVI.]

Footnotes:

1. Quod "mors" in Verbo significet resurrectionem, quoniam, cum moritur homo, continuatur usque ejus vita (3498, 3505, 4618, 4621, 6036, 6222 [6221?]).
