Heaven and Hell #23 (NCE, 2000)

23. The love that envelops people in the heavenly kingdom is called heavenly love, and the love that envelops people in the spiritual kingdom is called spiritual love. Heavenly love is love for the Lord, and spiritual love is thoughtfulness toward one's neighbor. Further, since all "good" is a matter of love (since whatever we love is good in our estimation), the good of the one kingdom is called heavenly and the good of the other, spiritual. We can see from this the way in which these two kingdoms are distinguished from each other: namely, that it is like the way the good of love for the Lord is distinguished from the good of thoughtfulness toward our neighbor. 1Since the former good is a deeper good and the former love is a deeper love, heavenly angels are more inward angels, and are called "higher."

Footnotes:

1. The good of the heavenly kingdom is the good of love for the Lord, and the good of the spiritual kingdom is the good of thoughtfulness toward one's neighbor: 3691, 6435, 9468, 9680, 9683, 9780.

Heaven and Hell #23 (Harley, 1958)

23. The love in which those are who are in the celestial kingdom is called celestial love which is love to the Lord. Those who are in the spiritual kingdom are in the love called spiritual which is charity towards the neighbour. And as all good is of love, for that which anyone loves is to him good, therefore also, the good of the one kingdom is called celestial, and the good of the other spiritual. Hence it is evident in what respect the two kingdoms are distinguished from each other, namely, in the same way as the good of love to the Lord is distinguished from the good of charity towards the neighbour. 1Because then, the good of love to the Lord is an interior good and that love is interior love, so the celestial angels are interior angels and are called higher angels.

Footnotes:

1. The good of the celestial kingdom is good of love to the Lord, and the good of the spiritual kingdom is good of charity towards the neighbour (Arcana Coelestia 3691, 6435, 9468, 9680, 9683, 9780).

Heaven and Hell #23 (Ager, 1900)

23. The love in which those are, who are in the celestial kingdom is called celestial love, and the love in which those are who are in the spiritual kingdom is called spiritual love. Celestial love is love to the Lord, and spiritual love is love towards the neighbor. And as all good pertains to love (for good to any one is what he loves) the good also of the other kingdom is called celestial, and the good of the other spiritual. Evidently, then, the two kingdoms are distinguished from each other in the same way as good of love to the Lord is distinguished from good of love towards the neighbor. 1And as the good of love to the Lord is an interior good, and that love is interior love, so the celestial angels are interior angels, and are called higher angels.

Footnotes:

1. The good of the celestial kingdom is good of love to the Lord, and the good of the spiritual kingdom is good of charity towards the neighbor (3691, 6435, 9468, 9680, 9683, 9780).

De Coelo et de Inferno #23 (original Latin)
