Heaven and Hell #150 (NCE, 2000)

150. This is why the cardinal directions in heaven mean the qualities of the people who live there. The east means love and its good clearly perceived, the west the same dimly perceived, the south wisdom and intelligence in clear light, and the north the same in dim light. Further, since the directions have these meanings, they mean similar things in the inner or spiritual meaning of the Word, 1since the inner or spiritual meaning of the Word is in complete accord with the way things are in heaven.

Footnotes:

1. The east in the Word means love clearly perceived: 1250, 3708. The west means love dimly perceived: 3708, 9653. The south means a state of light of wisdom and intelligence: 1458, 3708, 5672; and the north means that state dimly perceived: 3708.

Heaven and Hell #150 (Harley, 1958)

150. Because of this, the quarters in the heavens signify such things as pertain to those who dwell in them-the east signifying love and its good in clear perception, the west the same in obscure perception, the south wisdom and intelligence in clear light and the north the same in obscure light. And because of this signification of the quarters in heaven they have a like signification in the internal or spiritual sense of the Word, 1for the internal or spiritual sense of the Word is in entire accord with what is in heaven.

Footnotes:

1. The "east", in the Word, signifies love in clear perception (Arcana Coelestia 1250, 3708); the "west", love in obscure perception (Arcana Coelestia 3708, 9653); the "south" a state of light, or of wisdom and intelligence (Arcana Coelestia 1458, 3708, 5672); and the "north", that state in obscurity (Arcana Coelestia 3708).

Heaven and Hell #150 (Ager, 1900)

150. Because of this the quarters in the heavens signify such things as pertain to those that dwell in them, - the east signifying love and its good clearly perceived, the west the same obscurely perceived, the south wisdom and intelligence in clear light, and the north the same in obscure light. And because of this signification of the quarters in heaven they have a like signification in the internal or spiritual sense of the Word,1 since the internal or spiritual sense of the Word is in entire accord with what is in heaven.

Arcana Coelestia 1250, 3708); the "west" love obscurely perceived (3708, 9653); the "south" a state of light, that is, of wisdom and intelligence (1458, 3708, 5672); and the "north" that state in obscurity (3708).

De Coelo et de Inferno #150 (original Latin)

Footnotes:

1. Quod "oriens" in Verbo significet amorem in perceptione clara (1250, 3708): "occidens" amorem in perceptione obscura (3708, 9653): "meridies" statum lucis seu sapientiae et intelligentiae (1458, 3708, 5672): et "septentrio" illum statum in obscuro (3708).
