Heaven and Hell #131 (NCE, 2000)

131. Since heaven's light is divine truth, that light is also divine wisdom and intelligence. Consequently "being raised into heaven's light" means the same thing as "being raised into intelligence and wisdom" and "being enlightened." So too, light among angels is at exactly the same level as their intelligence and wisdom.

Since heaven's light is divine wisdom, people are recognized in heaven's light for what they really are. Everyone's inner nature shines forth from the face just as it is, with nothing whatever concealed. Further, the more internally minded angels love to have everything within them visible because they do not intend anything but what is good. It is different for people who are below heaven and do not intend what is good. They are profoundly afraid of being seen in heaven's light. Remarkably, people in hell look human to each other, but in heaven's light they look like monsters, with frightful faces and bodies, in the exact form of their evil. 1

We have a similar appearance as to our spirits when angels look at us. If we are good, we look like handsome individuals in accord with our goodness; if we are evil we look like monsters, misshapen in accord with our evil. We can see from this that everything is clear in heaven's light. It is clear because heaven's light is divine truth.

Footnotes:

1. People in the hells look human in their own light, which is like the light of glowing coals; but in heaven's light they look like monsters: 4532 [4531?], 4533, 4674, 5057-5058, 6605, 6626.

Heaven and Hell #131 (Harley, 1958)

131. As the light of heaven is Divine Truth, that light is also Divine wisdom and intelligence. Therefore, to be raised up into the light of heaven means the same as to be raised up into intelligence and wisdom and to be enlightened. For this reason the light with angels is in the same degree as their intelligence and wisdom. Because the light of heaven is Divine wisdom, therefore in that light the character of everyone is recognized. The interiors of anyone lie open to view in his face, just as they are, with not the least thing hidden. Interior angels also love all things pertaining to them to lie revealed, since they will nothing but good. It is otherwise with those beneath heaven who do not will what is good and therefore greatly fear to be seen in the light of heaven. And wonderful to tell, those in hell appear to one another as men, but, in the light of heaven they appear as monsters, horrid in face and body, the exact form of their own evil. 1Man, in respect of his spirit, when observed by angels, is seen in the same way; if good, he appears as a man, beautiful in accord with his good, if evil, as a monster, deformed in accord with his evil. From this it is clear that all things are made manifest in the light of heaven. They are made manifest because the light of heaven is Divine Truth.

Footnotes:

1. They who are in the hells, in their own light, which is like that of burning charcoal, appear to themselves as men, but in the light of heaven as monsters (Arcana Coelestia 4531, 4533, 4674, 5057-5058, 6605, 6626).

Heaven and Hell #131 (Ager, 1900)

131. As the light of heaven is Divine truth, that light is also Divine wisdom and intelligence; therefore to be raised up into the light of heaven means the same as to be raised up into intelligence and wisdom and enlightened. For this reason the angels have light in just the same degree as they have intelligence and wisdom. Because the light of heaven is Divine wisdom, in that light the character of everyone is recognized. The interiors of everyone lie open to view in his face just as they are, with not the least thing hidden. And interior angels love to have all things that pertain to them lying open, since they will nothing but good. It is otherwise with those beneath heaven, who do not will what is good, and for that reason fear greatly to be seen in the light of heaven. And wonderful to tell, while those in hell appear to one another as men, in the light of heaven they appear as monsters, with a horrid face and body, the exact form of their own evil. 1In respect to his spirit man appears, when seen by angels, in a like way; if good as a man, beautiful in accord with his good; if evil as a monster, ugly in accord with his evil. From this it is clear that in the light of heaven all things are made manifest, and for the reason that the light of heaven is Divine truth.

Footnotes:

1. Those in the hells, in their own light, which is like the light from burning coals, appear to themselves as men but in the light of heaven they appear as monsters (4531, 4533, 4674, 5057-5058, 6605, 6626).

De Coelo et de Inferno #131 (original Latin)
