Heaven and Hell #114 (NCE, 2000)

114. We may now say something about the knowledge of correspondences and its use. We have just stated that the spiritual world, which is heaven, is united to the natural world by means of correspondences; so it is through correspondences that we are given communication with heaven. Heaven's angels do not think in terms of natural phenomena the way we do, so when we are absorbed in the knowledge of correspondences we can be in the company of angels in respect to the thoughts of our minds. So we can be united to them in regard to our spiritual or inner person.

In order that there might be a union of heaven with humanity, the Word was written in pure correspondences. Absolutely everything in it corresponds. 1So if we were steeped in a knowledge of correspondences, we would understand the Word in its spiritual meaning and be enabled to know hidden treasures in it that we do not see at all in its literal meaning. The Word does in fact have a literal meaning and a spiritual meaning. 2The literal meaning consists of the kind of things that are in our world, while the spiritual meaning consists of the kind of things that are in heaven; and since the union of heaven with our world is maintained by correspondences, we have been given a Word in which the details correspond, even down to the last jot.

Footnotes:

1. The Word was written in pure correspondences: 8615. Through the Word, there is a union of humanity with heaven: 2899, 6943, 9396, 9400-9401, 10375, 10452.

2. On the spiritual meaning of the Word, see the booklet The White Horse Described in the Book of Revelation.

Heaven and Hell #114 (Harley, 1958)

114. Something will now be said about the knowledge of correspondences and its use. It was said above that the spiritual world, which is heaven, is conjoined to the natural world by means of correspondences. Therefore, by means of correspondences, communication with heaven is granted to man. For the angels of heaven do not think from natural things, as man does. Consequently, when man is in the knowledge of correspondences, he is able, in regard to the thoughts of his mind, to be together with the angels, and thus, as to his spiritual or internal man, to be conjoined with them. In order that there may be conjunction of heaven with man, the Word has been written by means of pure correspondences, for all things in it in general and particular are correspondences. 1If man, therefore, were in the knowledge of correspondences, he would understand the Word as to its spiritual sense and would thereby be enabled to know arcana of which he sees nothing in the sense of the letter. For in the Word there is a literal sense and there is a spiritual sense. The literal sense consists of such things as are in the world, but the spiritual sense of such things as are in heaven, and since the conjunction of heaven with the world is by means of correspondences, therefore such a Word was given in which the details down to the least jot (iota) are in correspondence. 2

Footnotes:

1. The Word has been written by means of pure correspondences (Arcana Coelestia 8615).

By means of the Word man has conjunction with heaven (Arcana Coelestia 2899, 6943, 9396, 9400-9401, 10375, 10452).

2. Concerning the spiritual sense of the Word see the little work on THE WHITE HORSE described in the Revelation.

Heaven and Hell #114 (Ager, 1900)

114. Something shall now be said about the knowledge of correspondences and its use. It has been said above that the spiritual world, which is heaven, is conjoined with the natural world by means of correspondences; therefore by means of correspondences communication with heaven is granted to man. For the angels of heaven do not think from natural things, as man does; but when man has acquired a knowledge of correspondences he is able, in respect to the thoughts of his mind, to be associated with the angels, and thus in respect to his spiritual or internal man to be conjoined with them. That there might be such a conjunction of heaven with man the Word was written wholly by correspondences, each thing and all things in it being correspondent. 1If man, therefore, had a knowledge of correspondences he would understand the spiritual sense of the Word, and from that it would be given him to know arcana of which he sees nothing in the sense of the letter. For there is a literal sense and there is a spiritual sense in the Word, the literal sense made up of such things as are in the world, and the spiritual sense of such things as are in heaven. And such a Word, in which everything down to the least jot is a correspondence, was given to men because the conjunction of heaven with the world is effected by means of correspondences. 2

Footnotes:

1. The Word was written wholly by correspondences (Arcana Coelestia 8615).

By means, of the Word man has conjunction with heaven (2899, 6943, 9396, 9400-9401, 10375, 10452).

2. Concerning the spiritual sense of the Word see the little work on The White Horse referred to in the Apocalypse.

De Coelo et de Inferno #114 (original Latin)

Footnotes:

1. Quod Verbum conscriptum sit per meras correspondentias (8615).

Quod per Verbum sit conjunctio homini cum caelo (2899, 6943, 9396, 9400, 9401, 10375, 10452).

2. De Verbi sensu spirituali videatur in opusculo De Equo Albo, de quo in Apocalypsi.
