  9854.“用拧细绳的手工”表联结的方式。这从“细绳”的含义清楚可知,“细绳”是指用来将事物联结起来的东西。“细绳”之所以表示将事物联结起来的东西,是因为这种绳子是用来将一个物体与另一个物体联结起来的。但在此它表示联结的方式,因为经上说,金链要“用拧细绳的手工”来做。在原文,“细绳”用来描述用拧和缠绕的手工所作的绳子,以此在内义上表示一种联结,就是在记忆知识里面并使这些知识相互关联的真理的联结,因而表示在属世或外部记忆中的一种联结。之所以表示这种联结,是因为此处所论述的主题是真理通过良善在属灵国度的最后和最低部分中的联结。因为通过“拧细绳的手工”所作的小链子与肩带相连的“以弗得”和“胸牌”表示属灵国度的最低层(9824节)。至于缠结或缠绕之物表示记忆知识,可参看前文(2831节)。
  此外,来世也会出现各种缠绕和粗细不同的绳子,它们代表各种将事物联结起来的方式。这也解释了为何在圣言中,“绳子”或“绳索”表示用来联结的事物,如下列经文:
  祸哉!那些以虚谎的细绳牵引罪孽的人!他们又像以套车粗绳拉罪。(以赛亚书5:18
  “虚谎的细绳”是指虚假的联结,生活中的罪孽或邪恶通过这种联结被带进来。以赛亚书:

9854. With cord-work. That this signifies the method of the conjunction, is evident from the signification of "cord," as being that which conjoins. That "cord" denotes that which conjoins, is because by means of it conjunction is effected; but here it signifies the method of the conjunction, because it is said that the chains of gold were to be made with cord-work. In the original tongue there is meant a cord made of twisted and entwined work, by which in the internal sense is signified conjunction such as is that of truths in memory-knowledges and among memory-knowledges, thus of those which are in the natural or external memory. The reason why such conjunction is signified, is that the subject here treated of is the conjunction of truths by means of good in the ultimates of the spiritual kingdom; for by "the ephod" and "the breastplate," with which by means of the chains made with a work of cords there was conjunction, is signified the spiritual kingdom in ultimates (n. 9824); (that what is entwined denotes memory-knowledge, see n. 2831). [2] Moreover, in the other life there appear cords of various twist and thickness, and by them are represented various methods of conjunction. It is from this that by "ropes" or "cords" in the Word also are signified things which conjoin, as in the following passages:

Woe unto them that draw iniquity with cords of vanity, and sin as it were with a cart rope (Isa. 5:18);

where "cords of vanity" denote conjunctions of falsities through which there is iniquity or evil of life. Again:

Look upon Zion, the city of our set feast; thine eyes shall see Jerusalem a quiet habitation, a tent that shall not be scattered; the stakes thereof shall never be removed, neither shall any of the cords thereof be plucked out. Thy cords have been slackened; they shall not make firm their pole (Isa. 33:20, 23);

here "stakes" and "cords" denote the things which conjoin the truths and goods of heaven, for the Habitation and the Tent, of which "the cords" are here predicated, denote heaven (n. 9457, 9481, 9485, 9615, 9784). [3] Again:

Enlarge the place of thy tent, and let them stretch forth the curtains of thy habitations; forbid not, make long thy cords and make firm thy stakes (Isa. 54:2). My tent is laid waste, and all My cords plucked out (Jer. 10:20);

here also "cords" denote things which conjoin and make firm; "tent" denotes the church, which is the heaven of the Lord. In Hosea:

I drew them with cords of a man, with thick cords of love (Hos. 11:4);

where "cords" manifestly denote the things which conjoin, for love is spiritual conjunction. In Ezekiel:

Asshur and Chilmad were thy traders in chests of garments tied with cords (Ezek. 27:23, 24);

speaking of Tyre, by which are signified the knowledges of good and truth (n. 1201); the external conjunctions of these are meant by "garments tied with cords." Moreover, in the Word "cords" also signify portions of inheritance and of land, for the reason that measurements were made with cords (see Deut. 32:9; Amos 7:17; Micah 2:4, 5; Zech. 2:1; Ps. 16:6; 78:55; 105:11; 140:5; and many other passages).

9854. 'With the work of slender rope' means the mode of the joining together. This is clear from the meaning of 'slender rope' as that which serves to join things together. The reason why 'slender rope' means that which so serves to join things together is that such a cord is used to join one object to another. But in this instance it means the mode of the joining together, for the narrative is saying that the small chains of pure gold had to be made 'with the work' of slender rope. 'Slender rope' is used in the original language to describe a cord made from twisted and intertwined work, by which is meant in the internal sense a joining together such as that of truths within known facts and interlinking such facts, thus a joining together in the natural or external memory. The reason why this kind of joining together is meant is that the subject at this point is the joining together of truths through good in the last and lowest parts of the spiritual kingdom. For 'the ephod' and 'the breastplate', to which [the shoulder-pieces] were joined by means of the small chains made from 'the work of slender rope', mean the lowest levels of the spiritual kingdom, 9824. As regards what is intertwined or tangled, that it denotes factual knowledge, see 2831.

[2] In the next life also ropes appear, varying in the ways in which their strands are twisted together and varying in thickness; and they represent the varying modes by which things are joined together. This explains also why in the Word things which serve to join others together are meant by 'ropes', as in the following places: In Isaiah,

Woe to those who draw iniquity with ropes of vanity, and [whose] sin is like a cart rope! Isa 5:18.

'Ropes of vanity' are joinings together of falsities, through which iniquity or evil in life is brought in. In the same prophet,

Look upon Zion, the city of our appointed feast. May your eyes see Jerusalem, a quiet dwelling-place, a tent which will not be overthrown. Its pegs will never be removed, and none of its ropes will be pulled away. Your ropes have been loosed; they will not strengthen their mast. Isa 33:20, 23.

'Pegs' and 'ropes' stand for the things which serve to join together heaven's truths and forms of good; for the dwelling-place and tent, which the ropes spoken of here belong to, are heaven, 9457, 9481, 9485, 9615, 9784.

Enlarge the place of your tent, and let them stretch out the curtains of your dwelling-places; do not stop [them]. Lengthen your ropes, and make your pegs firm. Isa 54:2.

And in Jeremiah,

My tent has been laid waste, and all My ropes torn away. Jer 10:20.

Here also 'ropes' stands for things that serve to join others together and make them firm. 'Tent' stands for the Church, which is the Lord's heaven on earth. In Hosea,

I drew them with ropes of human kindness,a with thick ropes of love. Hosea 11:4.

Here 'ropes' plainly stands for things which join others together; for love is spiritual togetherness. In Ezekiel,

Asshur and Kilmad, they were your traders with the treasures of garments tied by means of ropes. Ezek 27:23, 24.

This refers to Tyre, by which cognitions or knowledge of goodness and truth are meant, 1201. Outward joinings together of these are meant by 'garments tied by means of ropes'. In addition 'ropes' is also used in the Word to mean apportionments of inheritances and of the land, because ropes were used in measurements of them, as in Deut 32:9; Amos 7:17; Micah 2:4, 5; Zech 2:1; Ps 16:6; 78:55; 105:11; 140:5; and many times elsewhere.
