Potts(1905-1910) 4875

4875. And thy kerchief. That this signifies by means of truth, namely, a token of consent, is evident from the signification of a "kerchief," as being truth. That a "kerchief" denotes truth, is because it is among those things which relate to garments, and by garments are in general signified truths; for as garments clothe the flesh, so truths clothe good (see n. 297, 2132, 2576, 4545, 4763). Among the ancients therefore, everything with which they were clothed signified some special and particular truth; hence a tunic signified one truth, the outer garment [chlamys] another, the outermost garment [toga] another; the coverings of the head too, as the miter and turban, another; also the coverings of the thighs and feet, as breeches and stockings, another; and so on. But a "kerchief" signified outermost or lowest truth, being made of threads twisted together, by which the determinations of such truth are signified. A "kerchief" signifies such truth also in Moses: Every open vessel upon which there is not a cloth (or kerchief) for a covering, it is unclean (Num. 20:15); whereby was signified that nothing should be indeterminate; for whatever is indeterminate is open. Moreover, it is outermost truths to which interior truths are determined, and in which they terminate.

Elliott(1983-1999) 4875

4875. 'Your cord' means through truth, that is to say, truth accompanying the token of consent. This is clear from the meaning of 'a cord' as truth. The reason 'a cord' means truth is that it is one of the items associated with 'garments', and 'garments' in general means truths, for the reason that as garments clothe the flesh, so truths clothe good, 297, 2132, 2576, 4545, 4763. Among the ancients therefore whatever clothing they wore meant some specific or individual truth. Consequently a tunic had one meaning, a chlamys another, and a toga another; also coverings for the head, such as a turban and a mitre, had one meaning, coverings for the thighs and feet, such as breeches, stockings, and so on, had another meaning. But 'a cord' meant outermost or lowest truth, for it was made from threads twisted together, by which the final demarcation of that kind of truth was meant. This kind of truth is again meant by 'e cord' in Moses,

Every open vessel on which there is no covering [or] cord [to fasten it] is unclean. Num 19:15.

By this was meant that nothing should exist without having an outer limit, for that which does not have an outer limit is 'open'. Furthermore outermost truths serve as the outer limit and terminus of interior truths.

Latin(1748-1756) 4875

4875. `Panniculum tuum': quo significet per verum, nempe tessera consensus, constat a significatione `panniculi' quod sit verum;

quod `panniculus' sit verum, est quia est inter illa quae ad vestes referuntur, et per `vestes' in genere significantur vera, ex causa quia sicut vestes investiunt carnem, ita vera bonum, n. 297, 2132, 2576, 4545 4763; ideo apud antiquos unumquodvis quo vestiebantur, {1}aliquod speciale et particulare verum significabat; inde aliud tunica, aliud chlamys, aliud toga, etiam aliud indumenta capitis, ut cidaris et tiara, et aliud indumenta femorum et pedum, ut femoralia, tibialia, et sic porro; `panniculus' autem significabat verum extimum seu infimum; erat etiam ex filis contortis, per quae significatur veri talis determinationes; tale etiam verum significat panniculus apud Mosen, Omne vas apertum, super quo non operculum panniculus, immundum id, Num. xix 15;

@1 aliquid$
