Potts(1905-1910) 2834

2834. And offered him up for a burnt-offering in the stead of his son. That this signifies their sanctification and adoration, is evident from the signification of "offering for a burnt-offering," as being to be sanctified (see n. 2776) and from the signification of "in the stead of his son," as being adoption, namely, by the Lord's Divine Human, which here is "Abraham" (n. 2833). The adoption of the spiritual is described in John:

Jesus said, I am the vine, ye are the branches; he that abideth in Me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit; for without Me ye can do nothing (John 15:5). (That a "vine" is the spiritual church may be seen above, n. 1069.)

Elliott(1983-1999) 2834

2834. 'And offered it as a burnt offering instead of his son' means their sanctification and adoption. This is clear from the meaning of 'offering as a burnt offering' as being sanctified, dealt with in 2776, and from the meaning of 'instead of his son' as being adopted, that is to say, by the Lord's Divine Human, meant here by 'Abraham', 2833. The adoption of those who were spiritual is described in John,

Jesus said, I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for without Me you can do nothing. John 15:-5.

'The vine' is the spiritual Church, see 1069.

Latin(1748-1756) 2834

2834. `Et obtulit illum in holocaustum loco filii sui': quod significet sanctificationem eorum et adoptationem, constat ex significatione `offerri in holocaustum' quod sit sanctificari, de qua n. 2776, et a significatione `loco filii sui' quod sit adoptari, nempe a Divino Humano Domini quod hic est `Abraham,' n. 2833; {1}adoptatio spiritualium describitur apud Johannem, Jesus dixit, Ego sum Vitis, vos palmites; qui manet in Me, et Ego in illo, hic fert fructum multum, quia sine Me non potestis facere quicquam, xv 5;

quod `vitis' sit Ecclesia spiritualis, videatur n. 1069. @1 In place of this A has a passage deleted. See Appendix volume.$
