[NCE]158. The following passage from Isaiah shows that a man symbolizes the inner being or, what is the same, someone understanding and wise:
I am looking, and there is not a man, and [seeking] among them, and there is not a counselor. (Isaiah 41:28)
In other words, there is no one wise or understanding. In Jeremiah:
Dash about through the streets of Jerusalem and see whether you find a man, whether he is exercising judgment, seeking truth. (Jeremiah 5:1)
Exercising judgment stands for being wise; and seeking truth, for having understanding.

Potts(1905-1910) 158

158. That man [vir] signifies the internal man, or what is the same, one who is intelligent and wise, is plain from Isaiah:

I behold, and there is no man [vir], even among them, and there is no counselor (Isa. 41:28),

meaning none wise and intelligent. Also in Jeremiah:

Run ye to and fro through the streets of Jerusalem, and see if ye can find a man, if there be any executing judgment, seeking the truth (Jer. 5:1)

"One who executes judgment" means a wise person; and "one who seeks the truth" an intelligent one.

Elliott(1983-1999) 158

158. That 'man' (vir) means the internal man, or what amounts to the same, one who is intelligent and wise, is clear in Isaiah,

I look, and there is no man, and from these there is no counsellor. Isa 41:18.

['No man'] stands for no wise and intelligent person. In Jeremiah,

Run to and fro through the streets of Jerusalem and see if you find a man, if anyone is executing judgement and seeking truth. Jer 5:1.
'Executing judgement' stands for being wise, and 'seeking truth' for having intelligence.

Latin(1748-1756) 158

158. Quod 'vir' significet internum hominem, seu quod idem est, intelligentem et sapientem, constat apud Esaiam, Video et non vir, et de illis et non consiliarus, xli 28; pro quod non sapiens et intelligens: apud Jeremiam, Discurrite per plateas Hierosolymae, et videte,...si inveniatis virum, si sit faciens judicium, quaerens veritatem, V I;

'faciens judicium' pro sapiente, et 'quaerens veritatem' pro intelligente.
