[NCE]1142. The present chapter does not specify what these people were like, since it merely lists them by name, but the prophets' writings clarify it, where the names of these nations come up, as they often do. In each of those passages, the names have no other meaning [than that mentioned here], although it sometimes applies in a positive sense and sometimes in a negative.{*1}
Footnotes:
{*1} In 1066:5, Swedenborg asserts that every word in Scripture like "earth" or "land" (presumably meaning every noun) has both a positive and a negative meaning. [LHC, JSR]

Potts(1905-1910) 1142

1142. What manner of men they were specifically is not related in this chapter, for they are only recounted as to their names. But this appears from the writings of the prophets, where the names of these nations occur in different places, and everywhere with no other signification-though sometimes in the genuine, and sometimes in the opposite sense.

Elliott(1983-1999) 1142

1142. The specific character of these people is not recorded in this chapter, for only their names are listed. Their character is clear however from the writings of the Prophets, where the names of these nations occur in various places. And wherever they occur they have no other meaning, sometimes indeed in their genuine sense, at others in the contrary sense.
