True Christianity #424 (Rose, 2010)

424. Many people behave justly and faithfully in their jobs, and yet although they are doing works of goodwill in this way, they still have no goodwill in themselves. Their love for themselves and for the world is in control rather than love for heaven. If love for heaven happens to be present at all, it is under their other loves like a slave under a master, like a foot soldier under a commander, like a doorkeeper standing by the door.

------------

True Christian Religion #424 (Chadwick, 1988)

424. There are many people who fairly and faithfully perform their duties, and although in this way they do the deeds of charity, yet possess no charity in themselves. These are the people in whom self-love and love of the world are dominant, not the love of heaven; or if this is present, it is subject to another love, like a slave under his master, or a common soldier under his officer, and it resembles a door-keeper standing in a doorway.

------------

True Christian Religion #424 (Ager, 1970)

424. There are many who act justly and faithfully in their occupation, and thus promote works of charity, and yet do not possess any charity in themselves. But in these the love of self and the world predominates, and not the love of heaven; or if, perchance, the love of heaven is present, it is beneath the former love, like a servant under his master, a common soldier under his officer, or a doorkeeper standing at the door.

------------

True Christian Religion #424 (Dick, 1950)

424. There are many who act justly and faithfully in their occupation, and although they perform there works of charity, yet have no charity in themselves. In them the love of self and the world predominates, and not the love of heaven. If, perchance, this love is also present, it is beneath the worldly and selfish love, like a servant under his master, a common soldier under his officer, or a porter standing at the door.
