本章既已论述圣灵，有一点值得专门说明：旧约圣言通篇不曾出现“圣灵”这一固定称谓，仅有三处提及“圣洁的灵”（和合本作“圣灵”），一处见于大卫诗篇（诗51:11），两处见于以赛亚书（赛63:10，11）。[ 和合本在诗51:11，赛63:10，63:11三处均译作“圣灵”。瑞登堡原文区分拉丁术语 Spiritus Sanctus 与 Spiritus sanctitatis：前者是新约固定称谓“圣灵”，后者直译作“圣洁的灵”或“圣洁之灵”。旧约这三处希伯来原文本义更近于“你圣洁的灵”“祂圣洁的灵”。故此译文依从拉丁原文译为“圣洁的灵”，并在此注明与和合本译法之别。] 反观新约圣言，无论福音书、使徒行传或使徒书信，“圣灵”一词皆频繁出现。
缘由在于：当主降世时，圣灵才首次存在；因为圣灵是由主、从父而出的。唯独主是圣者，正如启示录所载：“独有你是圣的”（启15:4）。天使加百列也曾对主的母亲马利亚说：“所要生的圣者，必称为上帝的儿子”（路1:35）。经文亦明言：“那时还没有（赐下圣）灵（来），因为耶稣尚未得着荣耀”（约7:39）。
然而，在此以前，经文也记载圣灵充满以利沙伯（路1:41），又充满撒迦利亚（路1:67），并临到西面（路2:25）。其缘由乃是：充满他们的是父雅威的灵；而这灵因着主已经在世，便被称作圣灵。
这也正是旧约圣言从不记载众先知从圣灵说话，而只说他们从雅威说话的缘故。经文随处可见这类表述：“雅威的话临到我”“雅威对我说”“雅威如此说”“这是雅威说的”。为证此事实确凿，仅从耶利米书摘录相关经文节号如下：

158. A Supplement
Since the Holy Spirit is the subject of this chapter, it is very worthwhile to point out that nowhere in the Word of the Old Testament is the Holy Spirit mentioned. The "spirit of holiness" occurs in three passages, once in David (Psalms 51:11), and twice in Isaiah (Isaiah 63:10-11). The Holy Spirit is of course frequently mentioned in the Word of the New Testament, both in the Gospels and in the Acts of the Apostles and their Epistles. The reason for this is that the Holy Spirit first came into existence when the Lord had come into the world. The Holy Spirit emanates from him on behalf of the Father. The Lord alone is holy (Revelation 15:4). This is why the angel Gabriel mentioned to Mother Mary "the Holy One that will be born from you" (Luke 1:35).
Now, it says, "The Holy Spirit was not yet in existence, because Jesus was not glorified yet" (John 7:39), and yet before that it says that the Holy Spirit filled Elizabeth (Luke 1:41) and Zechariah (Luke 1:67), and also Simeon (Luke 2:25). The reason for this is that the spirit of Jehovah the Father filled them, and this is called "the Holy Spirit" because of the Lord, who was already in the world.
This is why no passage in the Word of the Old Testament says that the prophets spoke on behalf of the Holy Spirit; they spoke on behalf of Jehovah. It constantly says Jehovah spoke to me, the word of Jehovah came to me, Jehovah said, says Jehovah. So that no one will doubt the truth of this, I want to list the references in Jeremiah alone where these expressions occur:

These are just the passages in Jeremiah. It says the same thing in all the other prophets. It does not say that the Holy Spirit spoke; and it does not say that Jehovah spoke to them through the Holy Spirit.

158. ADDITIONAL NOTE
Since this chapter has dealt with the Holy Spirit, it is of importance to note that the Holy Spirit is nowhere named in the Old Testament Word, but only 'the Spirit of holiness' in three passages, one in the Psalms of David (Psalms 51:11), and two in Isaiah (Isaiah 63:10-11). But there are frequent references in the New Testament Word, as much in the Gospels as in the Acts of the Apostles and in their Epistles. The reason is that the Holy Spirit first existed when the Lord came into the world, for it came out of Him from the Father; for 'the Lord alone is holy' (Revelation 15:4). For this reason too the angel Gabriel speaking to Mary the mother of Jesus said 'the holy thing which will be born of you' (Luke 1:35). The reason why we read 'The Holy Spirit was not yet, because Jesus was not yet glorified' (John 7:39), although it was said earlier that the Holy Spirit filled Elizabeth (Luke 1:41) and Zechariah (Luke 1:67), as well as Simeon (Luke 2:25), was that it was the spirit of Jehovah the Father which filled them; and it was called the Holy Spirit because the Lord was already at that time in the world.
This is why nowhere in the Old Testament Word does it say that the Prophets spoke from the Holy Spirit, but from Jehovah. For everywhere we read 'Jehovah spoke to me', 'The Word from Jehovah came to me', 'Jehovah said', 'The saying of Jehovah.'

In the Word of the New Testament, however, both in the Evangelists and in the Acts of the Apostles, as well as in their Epistles, it is mentioned frequently. The reason is because the Holy Spirit existed for the first time when the Lord came into the world, for it proceeds out of Him from the Father;
for the Lord only is Holy, Revelation 15:4.
Therefore it is also said by the angel Gabriel to the mother Mary:
"That holy thing which shall be born of thee" Luke 1:35.
It is written:
"The Holy Spirit (A.V., Holy Ghost) was not yet; because that Jesus was not yet glorified" John 7:39;
