Sacred Scripture (Dole translation 2014) 43

43. As for the truths of the literal meaning of the Word being meant by the foundations of the wall of the New Jerusalem in Revelation 21, this follows from the fact that the New Jerusalem means a new church in regard to its teachings, as demonstrated in Revelation 21:17-20)

The number one hundred and forty-four means all the true and good elements of the church that arise from its teachings, which are drawn from the literal meaning of the Word. Twelve means much the same. A human being means understanding; an angel means divine truth as the source of understanding; the measure means the quality of that [understanding and truth]; the wall and its foundations mean the literal meaning of the Word; precious stones mean the elements of truth and goodness contained and carefully arranged in the Word, which are the source of a body of teaching and through that teaching, the source of the church.

Doctrine of the Sacred Scripture (Rogers translation 2014) 43

43. Truths in the Word’s literal sense are meant by the foundations of the wall of the New Jerusalem in Revelation 21. This follows from the fact that the New Jerusalem means a new church in respect to doctrine, as shown in Revelation 21:17)

And the wall had twelve foundations, “adorned with all kinds of precious stones”:

The first foundation was jasper, the second sapphire, the third chalcedony, the fourth emerald, the fifth sardonyx, the sixth sardius, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth chrysoprase, the eleventh jacinth, and the twelfth amethyst. (Revelation 21:19-20)

The number 144 symbolizes all the truths and goods of the church drawn from the Word’s literal sense, and so does the number 12. A person symbolizes intelligence; an angel, Divine truth from which that intelligence originates; measuring, their character; the wall and its foundations, the Word’s literal sense; and precious stones, the Word’s truths and goods in their sequence, from which doctrine originates, and through doctrine, the church.

Doctrine of Sacred Scripture (Dick translation) 43

43. (1) THE TRUTHS OF THE SENSE OF THE LETTER OF THE WORD ARE MEANT BY THE FOUNDATIONS OF THE WALL OF THE NEW JERUSALEM, in Revelation 21:14, 17-20.

This follows from the fact that by the New Jerusalem is meant a New Church as to doctrine, as was shown in Revelation 21:14, 17-20.

By the number one hundred and forty-four are signified all the truths and goods of the Church from doctrine derived from the sense of the Letter of the Word. The same is signified by twelve. By a man is signified intelligence; by an angel, Divine truth from which this is derived; by measurement is signified their quality; by the wall, and by its foundations, the sense of the Letter of the Word; and by the precious stones, the truths and goods of the Word in their order, from which is doctrine, and by means of doctrine, the Church.

Doctrine of the Holy Scripture (Potts translation 1904) 43

43. That the truths of the Word's sense of the letter are meant by the foundations of the wall of the New Jerusalem (Revelation 21:14), follows from the fact that the "New Jerusalem" means the New Church as to doctrine (as has been shown in Doctrine of the Lord, n. 21:17-20).

The number "144" signifies all the truths and goods of the church derived from doctrine that is drawn from the sense of the letter of the Word. The like is signified by "12." A "man" signifies intelligence; an "angel," Divine truth the source of intelligence; "measure," the quality of these; the "wall" and its "foundations," the sense of the letter of the Word; and the "precious stones," the truths and goods of the Word in their order, which are the source of doctrine, and through doctrine of the church.

Doctrina Novae Hierosolymae de Scriptura Sacra 43 (original Latin 1763)

Et murus habebat fundamenta duodecim, "omni lapide pretioso exornata: fundamentum primum jaspis, secundum sapphirus, tertium chalcedonius, quartum smaragdus, quintum sardonyx, sextum sardius, septimum chrysolithus, octavum beryllus, nonum topazius, decimum chrysoprasus, undecimum hyacinthus, duodecimum amethystus" (Apocalypsi 21:17-20):
