The New Jerusalem and its Heavenly Teachings (New Century Edition 2020) 230

230. Heaven and Hell

THERE are two elements that constitute our spiritual life: love and faith. Love constitutes the life of our will and faith constitutes the life of our understanding. A love of what is good and a consequent faith in what is true make up the life of heaven, and a love of what is evil and a consequent faith in what is false make up the life of hell.

The Heavenly City (Woofenden translation 1993) 230

230. Chapter 18. Heaven and Hell

Two things make up our spiritual life: love and faith. Love is the life of our motivation and faith is the life of our understanding. When we love what is good and believe what is true, our life becomes heaven. But when we love what is harmful and believe what is false, our life becomes hell.

The New Jerusalem and its Heavenly Doctrine (Chadwick translation 1990) 230

230. XVIII. ON HEAVEN AND HELL

There are two things which make up the life of a person's spirit: love and faith. Love makes up the life of his will, and faith that of his intellect. The love of good and faith in truth from it make up the life of heaven; and the love of evil and faith in falsity from it make up the life of hell.

The New Jerusalem and its Heavenly Doctrine (Tafel translation 1911) 230

230. HEAVEN AND HELL.

There are two things which constitute the life of a man's spirit, namely, love and faith; love constituting the life of his will, and faith the life of his understanding. The love of good, and the faith of truth from it, constitute the life of heaven; and the love of evil, and the faith of falsity from it, constitute the life of hell.

The New Jerusalem and its Heavenly Doctrine (Whitehead translation 1892) 230

230. XVIII. HEAVEN AND HELL.

There are two things which constitute the life of man's spirit, namely, love and faith; love constituting the life of his will, and faith the life of his understanding. The love of good and the faith of truth thence derived, constitute the life of heaven; and the love of evil, and the faith of falsity thence derived, constitute the life of hell.

De Nova Hierosolyma et ejus Doctrina Caelesti 230 (original Latin 1758)

230. (XVIII.)
