The New Jerusalem and its Heavenly Teachings (New Century Edition 2020) 187

187. Crises of the Spirit

Only people who are being regenerated experience spiritual crises, because spiritual crises are times of mental anguish for people whose lives are devoted to goodness and truth. These crises are brought about by evil spirits. When they stir up the evils in us, an anxiety wells up inside that is a symptom of our spiritual crisis. We are not aware, however, of where the anxiety is coming from because we do not realize that a spiritual crisis is its source.

The Heavenly City (Woofenden translation 1993) 187

187. Chapter 14. Inner Struggles

We go through spiritual struggles only if we are being reborn. Spiritual struggle is psychological distress brought on by harmful spirits when we do good things and have true ideas. We experience the anguish of inner struggle when these harmful spirits stir up the bad traits in us. Since we do not realize this is the source of these struggles, we have no idea where they come from.

The New Jerusalem and its Heavenly Doctrine (Chadwick translation 1990) 187

187. XIV. ON TEMPTATION

It is only those who are being regenerated who undergo spiritual temptations. For spiritual temptations are periods of mental distress experienced by those in states of good and truth, which are brought on by evil spirits. When these arouse the evils in them a state of anxiety arises due to being tempted. A person is not aware where it comes from because he does not know of this origin for it.

The New Jerusalem and its Heavenly Doctrine (Tafel translation 1911) 187

187. TEMPTATION.

Those only who are being regenerated undergo spiritual temptations; for spiritual temptations are pains of mind induced by evil spirits with those who are in goods and truths. When these spirits excite the evils which are with such persons, there arises that feeling of distress, which belongs to temptation. Not knowing this origin, the man does not know whence that distress comes.

The New Jerusalem and its Heavenly Doctrine (Whitehead translation 1892) 187

187. XIV. TEMPTATION.

Those only who are being regenerated, undergo spiritual temptations; for spiritual temptations are pains of mind induced by evil spirits, with those who are in goods and truths. While those spirits excite the evils which are with them, there arises the anxiety of temptation. Man does not know whence this anxiety comes, because he does not know his 1origin.

Footnotes:

1. The Latin is "hanc." It probably should be translated "its" or "this."

De Nova Hierosolyma et ejus Doctrina Caelesti 187 (original Latin 1758)

187. (XIV.)
