Heaven and Hell #169 (NCE, 2000)

169. A natural person may believe that we would have no thought if concepts of time, space, and matter were taken away from us, that all our thought is based on these foundations. 1Let such people know, though, that thoughts are limited and constrained to the extent that they derive from time, space, and matter, and that they are freed and expanded to the extent that they do not derive from such things, because to that same extent the mind is raised above bodily and worldly considerations. This is the source of angels' wisdom, which is so great that we must call it incomprehensible, since it does not fit into ideas that are formed merely from these [lower] concerns.

Footnotes:

1. Unlike angels, we do not think without some concept of time: 3404.

Heaven and Hell #169 (Harley, 1958)

169. The natural man can be of the opinion that he would be deprived of all thought if the ideas of time, space and material things were taken away, for upon these all man's thought rests. 1But let him know that so far as thoughts partake of time, space and matter, they are limited and confined, but are unlimited and extended so far as they do not partake of these, since the mind is in that measure raised above bodily and worldly things. It is from this that angels have a wisdom such as may be described as incomprehensible, because it does not fall into ideas that are wholly made up of corporeal and worldly things.

Footnotes:

1. Man does not think, as angels do, apart from the idea of time (Arcana Coelestia 3404).

Heaven and Hell #169 (Ager, 1900)

169. The natural man might think that he would be deprived of all thought if the ideas of time, space, and material things were taken away; for upon these all the thought of man rests. 1But let him know that so far as thoughts partake of time, space, and matter they are limited and confined, but are unlimited and extended so far as they do not partake of these, since the mind is in that measure raised above bodily and worldly things. This is the source of wisdom to the angels; and such wisdom as is called incomprehensible, because it does not fall into ideas that are wholly made up of what is material.

Footnotes:

1. Man does not think, as angels do, apart from the idea of time (Arcana Coelestia 3404).

De Coelo et de Inferno #169 (original Latin)
