Divine Providence (Rogers translation 2003) 214

214. Divine Providence Regards Eternal Ends, and Not Temporal Ones Except as They Accord with Eternal Ones

The fact that Divine providence regards eternal ends, and not temporal ones except as they coincide with eternal ones - this we are going to demonstrate under the following series of headings:

(1) Temporal ends have to do with advancements and riches, thus with honors and material gains, in the world.

(2) Eternal ends have to do with spiritual honors and riches, which are those of love and wisdom, in heaven.

(3) Temporal and eternal ends are separated by mankind, but conjoined by the Lord.

(4) The conjoining of temporal and eternal ends is the Lord's Divine providence.

Divine Providence (Dole translation 2003) 214

214. Divine Providence Focuses on Eternal Matters, and Focuses on Temporal Matters Only As They Coincide with Eternal Ones

I need to show that divine providence focuses on eternal matters and focuses on temporal matters only as they coincide with eternal ones, in the following sequence.

1. Temporal matters involve position and wealth, and therefore rank and money, in this world.

2. Eternal matters involve spiritual rank and wealth, which have to do with love and wisdom, in heaven.

3. We keep temporal and eternal matters separate, but the Lord unites them.

4. The union of temporal and eternal matters is the Lord's divine providence.

Divine Providence (Dick and Pulsford translation 1949) 214

214. THE DIVINE PROVIDENCE REGARDS ETERNAL THINGS, AND NOT TEMPORAL THINGS EXCEPT SO FAR AS THEY ACCORD WITH ETERNAL THINGS

That the Divine Providence regards eternal things, and not temporal things except so far as they make one with eternal things, will be shown in the following order:

I. Temporal things relate to dignities and riches, thus to honours and gain in the world.

II. Eternal things relate to spiritual honours and wealth, which pertain to love and wisdom in heaven.

III. Temporal and eternal things are separated by man, but are conjoined by the Lord.

IV. The conjunction of temporal and eternal things is the Divine Providence of the Lord.

Divine Providence (Ager translation 1899) 214

214. THE DIVINE PROVIDENCE LOOKS TO ETERNAL THINGS AND TO TEMPORAL THINGS ONLY SO FAR AS THEY AGREE WITH ETERNAL THINGS.

That the Divine providence looks to eternal things, and to temporal things only so far as they make one with eternal things, will be shown in the following order:-

(1) Temporal things relate to dignities and riches, thus to honors and acquisitions in the world.

(2) Eternal things relate to spiritual honors and possessions which pertain to love and wisdom in heaven.

(3) Temporal things and eternal things are separated by man, but are conjoined by the Lord.

(4) The conjunction of temporal things and eternal things is the Lord's Divine providence.

De Divina Providentia 214 (original Latin, 1764)
