Apocalypse Revealed (Rogers translation 2007) 101

101. "'And you will have tribulation ten days.'" This symbolically means that this will continue the whole time, that is, as long as they wish to remain caught up in falsities.

Tribulation, which we discussed in nos. 33 and 95 above, here symbolizes infestation, thus temptation or trial; and ten days symbolize the duration of that state to its completion. Therefore the people of this church are told next, "Be faithful until death," which symbolizes their reception and acknowledgment of truths until their falsities have been set aside and seemingly abolished.

Ten days symbolize the duration of their state to its completion because a day symbolizes a state, and ten completeness. For intervals of time in the Word symbolize states (no. 947), and numbers add their character (no. 10).

[2] Since ten symbolizes completeness, it also symbolizes much or many, and every or all, as can be seen from the following passages:

...the men who have seen My glory... have put Me to the test... ten times... (Numbers 14:22)

...ten times you have reproached me. (Job 19:3)

(Daniel was found) ten times better than... the astrologers. (Daniel 1:20)

...ten women shall bake your bread in one oven... (Leviticus 26:26)

...ten men from every language of the nations shall grasp the sleeve of a Jewish man... (Zechariah 8:23)

Because ten symbolizes much and also all, therefore the precepts that Jehovah wrote upon the tablets of the Decalogue are called the Ten Commandments (Deuteronomy 4:13; 10:4). The Ten Commandments embody all truths, for they encompass them.

Moreover, because ten symbolizes all, therefore the Lord likened the kingdom of heaven to ten virgins (Matthew 25:1). And in a parable He said of a certain nobleman that the nobleman gave his servants ten minas with which to do business (Luke 19:12-27).

Much is also symbolically meant by the ten horns of the beast that came up from the sea in Daniel 7:7; by the ten horns and the ten jewels 1upon the horns of the beast rising up from the sea in Revelation 13:1; by the ten horns of the dragon in Revelation 12:3; and by the ten horns of the scarlet beast with the woman sitting upon it in Revelation 17:3, 7, 12. The ten horns symbolize much power.

[3] From the symbolic meaning of ten as being complete, much, and all, it can be seen why it was instituted that a tenth part of all the produce of the earth be given to Jehovah, and by Jehovah in turn to Aaron and the Levites (Numbers 18:24, 28, Deuteronomy 14:22), and why Abram gave to Melchizedek a tithe of all (Genesis 14:18, 20). For this symbolically meant that everything they had therefore was from Jehovah and sanctified by Him (see Malachi 3:10).

It can be seen from this now that having tribulation ten days means, symbolically, that their temptation or trial will continue the whole time, that is, as long as they wish to remain caught up in falsities. For falsities are never taken from a person against his will, but in accord with it.

Footnotes:

1. The word translated as "jewels" here means diadems or crowns in the original Greek and Latin, but the writer's definitions of the term elsewhere make plain that he regularly and consistently interpreted it to mean jewels or gems.

Apocalypse Revealed (Coulson translation 1970) 101

101. 'And you shall have affliction ten days' signifies that this is going to last for a full period, that is, so long as they wish to remain in untruths. 'Affliction' here signifies the infestation (of which above, 33, 95), thus temptation; and 'ten days' signify the duration of that state to repletion; and therefore it follows, 'Be thou faithful even unto death,' by which is signified a reception and acknowledgment of truths (veritas) until by their means untruths have been removed and, as it were, abolished. 'Ten days' signify the duration of the state even to repletion, because 'days' signify states, and 'ten' what is full; for in the Word times signify states (947), and numbers add their quality (10).

[2] Since 'ten' signify what is full, they also signify much and many, also every and all, as can be established from the following passages:

The men who have seen My glory have tempted Me ten times. Numbers 14:22.

You have brought me to dishonour ten times, Job 19:3.

Daniel was discovered to be ten times wiser than the astrologers. Daniel 1:20.

Ten women shall bake bread in one oven. Leviticus 26:26.

Ten men out of all languages of the nations shall take hold of the skirt of a Jewish man, Zechariah 8:23.

Because 'ten' signify many, and also all, therefore the things that were written by Jehovah on the tables of the Decalogue are called TEN WORDS (Deuteronomy 4:13; 10:4). 'Ten words' are all truths, for they include them. And because 'ten' signify all people and all things, the Lord therefore compared the kingdom of the heavens to 'ten virgins' (Matthew 25:1). Moreover in a parable He said of the nobleman that he gave his servants 'ten minas' to trade with (Luke 19:12-27). Many things are also signified:

By the ten horns of the beast coming up out of the sea. Daniel 7:7.

And by the ten horns, and the ten diadems upon the horns, of the beast again coming up out of the sea. Revelation 13:1.

Also by the ten horns of the dragon. Revelation 12:3.

And by the ten horns of the scarlet-coloured beast on which the woman sat. Revelation 17:3, 7, 12.

[3] By 'ten horns' are signified much power. It can be seen from the signification of the number 'ten,' being what is full, much, and all, why it was arranged that a tenth part of all produce was given to Jehovah, and by Jehovah to Aaron and the Levites (Numbers 18:24, 28; Deuteronomy 14:22), also, why Abram gave Melchizedek tithes of all (Genesis 14:18-20). From these things it can now be established that by 'to have affliction ten days' is signified that the temptation is going to last for a full period, that is, so long as they wish to remain in untruths. For untruths are never taken away from a man against his will, but with it.

Apocalypse Revealed (Whitehead translation 1928) 101

101. And ye shall have affliction ten days, signifies that this will endure its full time, that is, as long as they are willing to remain in falsities. "Affliction" here signifies infestation (of which above, 33, 95), thus temptation; and "ten days" signify the duration of that state to the full; therefore it follows, "Be thou faithful unto death," by which is signified the reception and acknowledgment of truths, until by their means falsities are removed, and as it were abolished. That "ten days" signify duration of state even to the full is, because "days" signify states, and "ten" what is full: for times in the Word signify states, (947), and numbers describe their quality, (9).

[2] As "ten" signify what is full, they also signify much and many, also each and all, as may appear from these passages which follow:

The men who have seen My glory, have tempted Me ten times, (Numbers 14:22).

These ten times have ye treated me with ignominy, (Job 19:3).

Daniel was found ten times wiser than the astrologers, (Daniel 1:20).

Ten women shall bake bread in one oven, (Leviticus 26:26).

Ten men out of all languages of the nations shall take hold of the skirt of a man a Jew, (Zechariah 8:23).

Because "ten" signifies many, and also all, therefore the things which were written upon the tables of the Decalogue by Jehovah, are called the "Ten Words" (Deuteronomy 4:13; 10:4); the "Ten Words" signify all truths, for they include them. And because "ten" signifies all and all things, therefore the Lord compared the kingdom of the heavens to "ten virgins" (Matthew 25:1). Likewise in the parable He said of the nobleman, that he gave his servants "ten pounds" to trade with, (Luke 19:12-27). Many are also signified by:

The ten horns of the beast which came up out of the sea, (Daniel 7:7);

And by the ten horns and the ten diadems upon the horns of the beast coming up out of the sea, (Revelation 13:1);

Also by the ten horns of the dragon, (Revelation 12:3);

And by the ten horns of the scarlet-colored beast, upon which the woman sat, (Revelation 17:3, 7, 12).

[3] By "ten horns" is signified much power. From the signification of the number "ten," as being what is full, much, and all, it may be seen why it was ordained, that:

A tenth part of all the produce of the earth was given to Jehovah, and by Jehovah to Aaron and the Levites, (Numbers 18:24, 28; Deuteronomy 14:22);

also, why Abram gave Melchizedek tithes of all, (Genesis 14:18, 20); for by this was signified that thus all they had was from Jehovah, and was sanctified (see Malachi 3:10). From these things, it may now appear, that by having "affliction ten days," is signified that temptation will last its full time, that is, so long as they are willing to remain in falsities; for falsities are never taken away from a man against his will, but with it.

"Viri qui viderunt gloriam Meam, tentarunt Me Decem vicibus", (Numeri 14:22);

"Ignominia affecistis me Decem vicibus," (Hiob 19:3); 2

"Deprehensus est Daniel Decem vicibus sapiens super Astrologos," (Daniel 1:20)

"Coquent Decem mulieres panem in furno uno," (Leviticus 26:26);

"Apprehendent Decem viri ex omnibus linguis gentium alam viri Jehudaei," (Sacharias 8:23).

Quia "Decem" significant multa, et quoque omnia, ideo Illa quae super tabulis Decalogi a Jehovah scripta sunt, vocantur Decem Verba, (Deuteronomius 4:13; 10:4)

"Decem Verba" sunt omnia vera, includunt enim illa. Et quia "Decem significant omnes et omnia, ideo Dominus comparavit Regnum Caelorum Decem Virginibus, (Matthaeus 25:1);

Tum in Parabola dixit de homine nobili. quod dederit servis suis Decem minas ad negotiandum, (Luca 19:12-27). 3

Multa etiam significantur per Decem cornua bestiae ascendentis ex mari, (Daniel 7:7); 4

Perque Decem cornua, et per Decem diademata super cornubus bestiae etiam ascendentis ex mari, (Apocalypsis 13:1);

Tum per Decem cornua Draconis, (Apocalypsis 12:3);

Et per Decem cornua Bestiae coccineae, super qua mulier sedebat, (Apocalypsis 17:3, 7, 12);

per "Decem cornua" significatur multa potentia. Ex significatione numeri "Decem," quod sit plenum, multum, et omne, videri potest, cur institutum est, quod Decima pars ex omni proventu daretur Jehovae, et a Jehovah Aharoni, ac Levitis, (Numeri 18:24, 28; Deuteronomius 14:22);
