[NCE]993. Genesis 9:3. "Every creeping thing that is alive will serve you for food. I have given it all to you as I gave you the green plants."
Every creeping thing that is alive symbolizes any lower pleasure that contains some goodness, which is the living aspect. Will serve you for food symbolizes the joy that people would have in these pleasures. Green plants symbolize the humblest kinds of pleasure. All of it given to you means enjoying it because it is useful.{*1}
Footnotes:
{*1} The connection between use and pleasure is explored further in 994, which speaks of bodily pleasures anchored in "a use and purpose." Section 997 concludes that all kinds of sensory pleasure are granted for the sake of their use, that "each in its own way is brimming and alive with heaven's happiness." This principle of usefulness applies to other pleasures besides those of the senses: Swedenborg's theology emphasizes that "all the happiness and delight of life comes from use" (Heaven and Hell 361 note d; from the translation by George F. Dole). [RS, KK]

993. Verse 3. Every creeping thing that liveth shall be food for you; as the esculent herb have I given it all to you. "Every creeping thing that liveth" signifies all pleasures in which there is good which is living; "shall be food for you" signifies their delight, which they enjoy; "as the esculent herb" signifies what is vile of delights; "have I given it all to you" signifies enjoyment on account of use.

Elliott(1983-1999) 993

993. Verse 3 Every creeping thing that is living will be food for you; as the edible plant I have given all this to you.

'Every creeping thing that is living' means all pleasures containing good, which is living. 'Will be food for you' means the accompanying delight which people were to enjoy. 'The edible plant' means very lowly manifestations of delights. Its being 'given all to you' means enjoyment on account of use.

Latin(1748-1756) 993

993. Vers. 3. Omne reptile quod est vivum, vobis erit in cibum; sicut olus herbae dedi vobis id omne. 'Omne reptile quod est vivum' significat omnes voluptates in quibus bonum, quod est 'vivum': 'vobis erit in cibum' significat jucundum earum quo fruerentur: 'olus herbae' significat vilia jucunditatum: 'dari vobis id omne' significat fruitionem ob usum.
