[NCE]965. These are the facts concerning the hells and different forms of punishment. The tortures of hell are not pangs of conscience, as some suppose, because the inhabitants of hell have no conscience and therefore cannot feel the torment of one.{*1} People who have had a conscience are among the happy.

Footnotes:
{*1} Swedenborg may be referring to the opinion held by some Christians over the centuries that the sufferings of hell consist primarily in torments of conscience. For example, the church father Origen (around 185 to around 254) points out in his On First Principles 2.10.3-6 [Origen 1966, 140-144] that since the spiritual body is incorruptible (see 1 Corinthians 15:42, 52), the torments of hell mentioned in the Bible must be figurative, meaning torments of conscience rather than physical pains. On the same basis of incorruptibility, the great Catholic theologian Thomas Aquinas (1224 or 1225-1274) argues in his Supplement to Summa Theologiae 97:2 that the "worm" with which the Bible says the damned will be afflicted after death (he quotes the apocryphal books Judith 16:17 and Ecclesiasticus 7:17, but compare Job 24:20; Isaiah 51:8; 66:24; Mark 9:44, 46, 48) is remorse of conscience. Potts(1905-1910) 965

965. These things relate to the hells and to penalties. Infernal torments are not the stings of conscience, as some suppose, for those who are in hell have had no conscience, and therefore cannot suffer torment of conscience. Those who have had conscience are among the happy.

Elliott(1983-1999) 965

965. These details have to do with the hells and with types of punishments. The torments of hell are not, as some suppose, the gnawings of conscience, for people in hell have had no conscience and therefore cannot suffer the torment of conscience. Those who have had conscience are among the blessed.
