Potts(1905-1910) 7505

7505. A very grievous pestilence. That this signifies a consumption in general, is evident from the signification of "pestilence," as being the vastation of truth; and because it is called "a very grievous pestilence," there is signified the consumption of truth. That a "pestilence" signifies the vastation of truth is plain from the following passages in the Word:

When I send My four evil judgments upon Jerusalem; the sword, and the famine, and the evil beast, and the pestilence, to cut off from it man and beast (Ezek. 45:21);

"to cut off man and beast" denotes to vastate interior and exterior good. The sword is without, and the pestilence and the famine within; he that is in the field shall die by the sword; but he that is in the city, famine and pestilence shall devour him (Ezek. 7:15);

where "pestilence" denotes the vastation of good. Therefore because thou hast defiled My sanctuary with all thine abominations, a third part of thee shall die with the pestilence, and they shall be consumed in the midst of thee (Ezek. 5:11-12);

where "pestilence" denotes the wasting away of good. In Amos:

I have sent among you the pestilence in the way of Egypt: your young men have I slain with the sword, with the captivity of your horses (Amos 4:10);

where "the pestilence in the way of Egypt" denotes the vastation of good and truth by means of falsities, which are "the way of Egypt;" "your young men have I slain with the sword, with the captivity of horses" denotes the vastation of truth; "young men" denote truths, and "horses" intellectual things (as above, n. 7503). In David:

Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror of the night, for the arrow that flieth by day; for the pestilence that creepeth in thick darkness, for the death that wasteth at noonday (Ps. 91:5-6);

where "the pestilence that creepeth in thick darkness" denotes the evil which vastates in secret; "the death that wasteth at noonday" denotes the evil that vastates openly; besides other passages.

Elliott(1983-1999) 7505

7505. 'An extremely severe pestilence' means an overall annihilation. This is clear from the meaning of 'a pestilence' as a laying waste of truth, and since it says 'an extremely severe pestilence' the annihilation of truth is meant. The fact that 'a pestilence' means a laying waste of truth is evident from the following places in the Word: In Ezekiel,

... when I shall send My four severea judgements - sword, and famine, and evil wild animal, and pestilence - onto Jerusalem, to cut off man and beast from it. Ezek 14:21.

'Cutting off man and beast' stands for the laying waste of good, interior and exterior. In the same prophet,

The sword is without, and pestilence and famine within; he that is in the field will die by the sword, but him that is in the city famine and pestilence will devour. Ezek 7:15.

'Pestilence' stands for a laying waste of good. In the same prophet,

Therefore because you have defiled My sanctuary with all your abominations, a third part of you will die from pestilence, and be annihilated [by famine] in your midst. Ezek 5:11, 12.

'Pestilence' stands for an annihilation of good. In Amos,

I have sent the pestilence upon you in the way of Egypt, I have killed your young men with the sword, along with your captured horses.b Amos 4:10.

'The pestilence in the way of Egypt' stands for a laying waste of good and truth by means of falsities, which are 'the way of Egypt'. 'I have killed young men with the sword, along with captured horses' stands for a laying waste of truth, truths being meant by 'young men' and intellectual concepts by 'horses' as above in 7503. In David,

You will not be afraid of the terror of the night, of the arrow that flies by day, of the pestilence that creeps in thick darkness, of death that lays waste at noon-day. Ps 91:5, 6.

'The pestilence that creeps in thick darkness' stands for evil that lays waste in concealment; 'death that lays waste at noonday' stands for evil which does so out in the open. 'Pestilence' occurs in other places besides these.

`exscindere hominem et bestiam' pro vastare bonum interius et exterius: apud eundem, Gladius foris, et pestis atque fames intus; qui in agro, gladio morietur, qui vero in urbe, illum fames et pestis comedent, vii 15;
