[NCE]721. The symbolism of man and wife as falsity united to evil is clear from the things said directly above. Here man and wife is used of unclean animals but just above of clean animals. There it symbolized truth united to good, here falsity united to evil. The nature of the object described determines the meaning of the description.

Potts(1905-1910) 721

721. That by "man and wife" are signified falsities conjoined with evils, is evident from what was said just above. For here "man and wife" is predicated of the unclean beasts; but before of the clean; and therefore the expression there signified truths conjoined with goods, but here falsities conjoined with evils. Such as is the subject, such is the predication.

Elliott(1983-1999) 721

721. 'Male and mate'a means falsities joined to evils. This is clear from what has been stated just above, for 'male and mate' now has reference to unclean beasts whereas just above they had reference to clean. In that place therefore they meant truths joined to goods, whereas here they mean falsities joined to evils. For it is the subject that determines the nature of that which is attributed to it.

Notes

a lit. man and wife
