[NCE]656. By now it is apparent that the door on the side symbolizes hearing the message, and there is no need to bring in similar passages from the Word by way of confirmation. After all, the relationship between the ear and the internal sense organs is like that between the door on the side and the window above. And to say the same thing another way, it is like the relationship between hearing (which is the ear's function) and intellectual activity (which is a function of the internal senses).

Potts(1905-1910) 656

656. That by the "door at the side" is signified hearing is now therefore evident, and there is no need that it should be confirmed by similar examples from the Word. For the ear is to the internal organs of sense as a door at the side is to a window above; or what is the same, the hearing which is of the ear, is so to the intellectual part which is of the internal sensory.

Elliott(1983-1999) 656

656. 'The door in the side' means hearing. This is by now quite clear and so there is no need to confirm it by similar examples from the Word. For the relationship of the ear to inner sensory organs is like that of a door at the side to a window above, or what amounts to the same, the relationship of hearing, which is the function of the ear, to the understanding, which is the function of an inner sensory power.
