[NCE]432. Genesis 4:24. "For Cain will be avenged seven times, and Lamech seventy-seven times."
These words mean that they obliterated the faith meant by Cain, although there was a sacred ban on the violation of it, and at the same time they obliterated the charity that was to be born through faith. Charity being far more sacrosanct, the result was damnation, which is what being avenged seventy-seven times is.

Potts(1905-1910) 432

432. Verse 24. If Cain shall be avenged sevenfold, truly Lamech seventy and sevenfold. These words signify that they had extinguished the faith meant by "Cain" to do violence to which was sacrilege, and at the same time had extinguished the charity which should be born through faith, a far greater sacrilege, and that for this there was condemnation, that is, a "seventy and sevenfold avengement."

Elliott(1983-1999) 432

432. Verse 24 For sevenfold will Cain be avenged, and Lamech seventy-sevenfold. This means that men annihilated the faith meant by 'Cain', which it was utterly forbidden to violate; that at the same time they annihilated charity, which born by means of faith, something even more inviolable; and that on account of this, condemnation followed, which is 'being avenged seventy-sevenfold'.

Latin(1748-1756) 432

432. Vers. 24.
