Potts(1905-1910) 4277

4277. And he touched the hollow of his thigh. That this signifies where celestial spiritual good is conjoined with the natural good signified by "Jacob," is evident from the signification of the "thigh," as being conjugial love, and thence all celestial and spiritual love, because these are derived from conjugial love as offspring from their parent (see n. 3021); and from the signification of the "hollow," or "socket," or cavity of the thigh, as being where there is conjunction; here, therefore, where there is the conjunction of celestial spiritual good with the natural good signified by "Jacob." But of this conjunction nothing can be said unless it is first known what celestial spiritual good is, which is "Israel," and what natural good is, which is "Jacob." This will be told presently (at verse 28) in treating of Jacob, then named Israel, and again afterwards in treating of Jacob's posterity.

Elliott(1983-1999) 4277

4277. 'And he touched the hollow of his thigh' means where celestial-spiritual good is joined to natural good meant by 'Jacob'. This is clear from the meaning of 'the thigh' as conjugial love, and consequently as all celestial and spiritual love, since these are derived from conjugial love as offspring from their parent, dealt with in 3021; and from the meaning of 'the hollow' or socket or cavity of it - that is to say, of the thigh - as the place where the joining together exists, and here therefore where celestial-spiritual good is joined to natural good meant by 'Jacob'. But no one can be told anything about that conjunction unless he knows first of all what celestial-spiritual good, meant by 'Israel', is, and what natural good, meant by 'Jacob', is. It will be told below at verse 28 where Jacob, who at that point is named Israel, is the subject and also further on where Jacob's descendants are the subject.

Latin(1748-1756) 4277

4277. `Et tetigit volam femoris ejus': quod significet ubi bonum caeleste spirituale conjungitur cum bono naturali per `Jacobum significato, constat ex significatione `femoris' quod sit amor conjugialis et inde omnis amor caelestis et spiritualis, quia hi ab amore conjugiali ut {1} proles a suo parente derivantur, de qua n. 3021; et a significatione `volae' seu acetabuli, aut cavi illius, nempe femoris, quod sit ubi conjunctio; hic itaque ubi boni caelestis spiritualis cum bono naturali per `Jacobum' significato;

@1 sicut$ @2 priusquam$
