[NCE]1166. Put (that is, Libya) in the Word symbolizes knowledge gleaned from the literal meaning that — yet again — is used for confirming false premises; and in addition it stands simply for the knowledge itself. This can be seen from the passages cited earlier in reference to Cush, which likewise symbolizes knowledge, but knowledge at a deeper level. The Word mentions Put in conjunction with Cush; look at the section concerning Cush [1164] to see the places, as quoted from Jeremiah 46:9; Ezekiel 30:4-5, 6; Nahum 3:9; Daniel 11:43.

Potts(1905-1910) 1166

1166. That by "Put," or "Lybia," in the Word, are signified the knowledges from the literal sense by which in like manner false principles are confirmed, and also simply such knowledges, is evident from the passages cited above where "Cush" is spoken of. Because by him there are in like manner signified those knowledges which are more interior, "Put" and "Cush" are mentioned together in the Word, as may be seen in the passages above cited (Jer. 46:8, 9; Ezek. 30:4, 5; Nahum 3:9; Dan. 11:43).

Elliott(1983-1999) 1166

1166. In the Word 'Put' or Libya means cognitions drawn from the literal sense, which in a similar way confirm false assumptions. 'Put' also means simply such cognitions. This is clear from places quoted already where Cush is referred to. Because Cush too means cognitions, though interior ones, Put and Cush are mentioned together in the Word. Among the places quoted above, see Jer 46:9; Ezek 30:4-6; Nahum 3:9; Dan 11:43.
